Salvayn and Roos de Werk Revisited

Legg inn av Gjest » 26 jun 2006 00:20:03

Dear John R , Douglas and others,
I found a couple of
references in the Calender of Patent Rolls so nicely provided by the University of
Iowa relating to the restoration into the hands of these familes properties
forfeited by Robert de Roos, sometime Lord of Wark, Tynedale, Northumberland as
follows:
Edward III 8: 221 years1348-1350
Membrane 13 December 5, 1348
On the Petition of Gerard Salvayn of Hersewell, grandson and heir
of Robert de Roos of Wark, setting forth that Anthony sometime Bishop of Durham
intruding upon and holding the lordship of Wark in Tynedale over Edward I and
during the time of his seisin thereof caused the manor of Belestre in that
lordship, late of the same Robert to be taken into his hands, pretending that
Robert was of the quarrel of John Comyn of Badenagh, an adherent of the Scots,
enemies of that King and that the manor was on that account a forfeiture of war
and gave the manor, although the forfeiture was afterwards annulled as
appears by record had thereof to Brian, son of Alan and Maud his wife, in tail which
grant the present King eatified to Maud after the death of Brian and praying
that inasmuch as He
has recovered the same againest Miles de Stapelton and John, son of John de
Grey of Rotherfield, heirs of Brian and Maud, by judgment rendered on the
verdict of the great assize, by writ of right in the court of Queen Philippa at
Wark in Tynedale and has obtained seisin of the manor by virtue of such recovery,
the king will ratify and confirm his estate therein.the king for 20 marks
which He shall pay him, confirms the same.
June 26, 1367, Westminister Edward III Volume 13: 411
Exemplification at request of Gerard Salvayn, kinsman and heir of
Margaret, daughter and heir of Robert de Roos of Wark upon Twede of letters patent
dated at Clipstone 6 November 6 Edward II, pardoning to the said Margaret her
father`s forfeitures to Edward II and to his father on account of his adherence
to the Scots, She having represented to the King that the King`s father
granted to John Comyn of Badenagh and his men that They should be safe in respect to
life and limb and quit of imprisonment and disinhersion and that their heirs
under-age as She was at the time of the granting of those conditions should be
so likewise.

Personal Querys : Are these Gerard Salvayns the same or rather Father and
son ? The first is stated to be grandson to Robert de Roos, the second Kinsman
(nepos, grandson in this case? ) to Robert`s heir Margaret de Roos.
Also Which John de Grey of Rotherfield Grey was married to a daughter of
Brian FItz alan of Bedale ?
Sincerely,
James W Cummings

Good Evening James,
I too like the U of I's data, I myself haunt the 5th(visitations,
documentary books, etc.) floor and the 3rd(special manuscripts etc.)
floor of the library. Allegedly, the Iowa Historical library also here
at Iowa City 'has' and 'access' to collections from all over the world
and is supposed to be one of the best. You would like it here.
Best Regards,
Emmett L. Butler
