Some further particulars of the Hudlestons of Whittington, Lancs, taken
largely from VCH Lancashire, Vol 8:

1. Sir John de Hudleston, son and heir of Sir Richard de Hudleston;
summoned as a baron, 1297; served in the Scottish campaigns of Edward I
(see Knights of Edward I); presented to Whittington, 1296-7 and 1305;
made a grant of lands and the advowson of Whittington to Cartmel
Priory, 1299-1300 (PRO C143/33/15); had a grant of free warren at
Whittington, 1301; in the same year settled the manors of Whittington
and Clayton-le-Dale on a younger son, Robert, with remainder to another
younger son, Adam; dead by 1306; married Sibyl, daughter of Sir
Lawrence FitzRichard de Cornwall (illegitimate son of Richard, Earl of
Cornwall, himself younger son of King John), claimed dower at
Whittington, 1306. Issue:

2a. Sir Richard de Hudleston, called le Neveu; son and heir; ff 1282;
pardoned for involvement in Gaveston's murder, 1313; Knight of the
Shire for Westmorland, 1328; died 1335 (IPM); married Alice, daughter
of Richard Troughton (Nicholson & Burn). Left issue: Hudleston of
Millom

2b. Robert de Hudleston, had the manor of Whittington settled upon him
by his father, 1301; died without issue; one of this name instituted
Rector of Whittington, 1305

2c. Adam de Hudleston, remainderman in his father's settlement of
Whittington, 1301; succeeded to Whittington; said to have been captured
at the Battle of Bannockburn, 1322; granted land at Kirkby Ireleth by
his brother Sir Richard, 1311-12, against which William de Bolton and
Emma his wife claimed dower in 1314, and which he in turn granted to
Sir John Kirkby circa 1322; quitclaimed rights to Furness Abbey, 1322
(PRO, DL 25/392); married Katherine, claimed dower at Whittington,
1328; living in 1334 (VCH Lancs vol 6). Issue:

3. John de Hudleston, succeeded to Whittington by 1328; said to have
been killed at Cantsfield in 1336. Probable issue:

4. Richard de Hudleston, Lord of Whittington sometime between 1311 and
1344; probably the one of that name sued by the Prior of Cartmel in 8
Edward III (1334-1335) as "Richard son of John de Hudleston" for the
recovery of the advowson of Whittington (PRO DL 10/380)

************

John Hudleston was Lord in 1346 and 1378, and presented to Whittington
in 1380

*************

A. Richard Hudleston, Lord of Whittington, died in 1415; cf one of this
name witnessed a deed 10 July 1415 (Cumbria RO, DSTAN/1/9). Possibly
he should be identified with the one of that name, of "Hayton" or
"Hyton" [in Bootle, Cumberland], who witnessed deeds for Sir John
Hudleston of Millom 1391-1394 (Cumbria RO DSTAN) and was named in a
charge of 1398 as having joined with Richard, underage heir of Sir John
Hudleston of Millom, in an assault against the former's guardian, Sir
Robert Harrington (PRO SC8/214/10669); issue:

B1. Ralph Hudleston, born circa 1389; succeeded his father in the
Whittington estates, 1415; presented to Whittington, 1419-20; served in
the French wars under the Earl of Salisbury, 1428; died circa 1438;
married Katherine, presented to Whittington, 1448

B2. (probably) Agnes Hudleston, married to William Greene of
Gressingham, Lancs (Vis Herts, sub Docwra).

**************

William Hudleston of Whittington in Coupland, Cumberland (sic),
esquire: sued Joan Rotyngton of Hertfordshire for debt, 1432 (Cal. Pat.
R): cf Sir William Hudleston of Coupland, Northumberland (sic) " a
Lancastrain retainer who was knighted by Henry V after the battle of
Agincourt, and afterwards played a notable part in the wars against the
French (and who) owned estates in the Lonsdale area of Lancashire" (HoP
1386-1421, Vol iii, sub Huddlestone) and who is otherwise identified as
the brother of Sir Richard Hudleston of Millom

**************

William Hudleston was instituted as Rector of Whittington in 1448, and
was still serving in 1485 (A2A)

**************

Miles Hudleston claimed in 1464 to be heir of Sir Richard Hudleston
(sic); he may have been the head of the Whittington branch; perhaps he
is to identified with the one of that name of Melcheburn, Bedfordshire,
esquire, concerned in a grant the farm of lands at Whittington by the
Crown, 14 June 1450 (Cal. Pat. R)

***************

Richard Hudleston presented to Whittington in 1506; he may be
identified with the one of that name who in 1553 made a settlement of
Whittington upon his grandson, Miles Huddleston, with remainder to his
(Richard's) son William; possibly the one of that name who, together
with John Hudleston and James Hudleston, was executor to Miles
Hudleston, "parson of Whittington", and was sued by John Hudleston,
Esquire, son and heir of William Hudleston, in relation to the
detention of deeds by Isabel Hudleston, "late the wife of William
Hudleston, gentleman, she maintaining the claim of John, son of John
Hudleston, knight" (PRO C 1/324/20)

****************

Miles Hudleston was instituted as Rector of Whittington circa 1530

****************

Miles Hudleston, grandson and heir of Richard Hudleston, had
Whittington settled upon him in 1553; presented to Whittington, 1576;
died July 1577; married 12 January 1570/1 Katherine Conyers. Left
issue, a daughter Anne, whose marriage in 1589 to Thomas Carus took the
Whittington estates into that family.

As Will Johnson has kindly pointed out, this should read "son and heir
of *John* de Hudleston".
