One of Eleanor Roosevelt Roosevelt's ancestors was a certain Mr.
William Diodate of New Haven, Conn. For more on Diodate, see _Mr.
William Diodate (of New Haven from 1717 to 1751) and His Italian
Ancestry_, which is available on the BYU website:

http://contentdm.lib.byu.edu/cdm4/docum ... 9474&REC=2

Particularly important in verifying Mr. Diodate's English origin is the
family bible, mentioned on p. 7: "some records, still existing in a
Bible which belonged to William Diodate in the year 1728, in his own
hand-writing, ... inform us that his father's name was John, and his
mother the eldest daughter of John Morton, Esq., by Elizabeth, only
child of John Whicker, and the widow of Alderman Cranne [sic] (as we
read) of London; and that he had a brother John, older than himself,
and a sister Elizabeth."

Page 8 gives details of his sister Elizabeth's will: "... and we also
have the will of the sister, under her married name of Elizabeth
Scarlett, dated Feb. 23, 1768, in which the principal bequests are to
the daughter of her deceased brother in New England and her children."

There is an extracted record in the IGI for the sister's marriage:

Saint Anne And Saint Agnes Aldersgate, London

Anthony Scarlett and Eliz. DISDATE, 13 June 1729

as well as one for:

Saint Mary Aldermary, London

John Morton and Mrs. Elizebeth Cranley, 1 June 1658

The American immigrant was supposed to be descended from a brother of a
friend of John Milton's.

Charles Diodati (d 1638) was Milton's closest friend, and inspired some
of his finest poetry - three elegies and a sonnet, including the Elegy
for Damon. For some of his family details see:
