Have been searching for the earliest ancestor of John DIXWELL, the
regicide. "Burke's Extinct & Dormant Baronetcies," DIXWELLS of Brome [
BROOME] p. 161 has this opening statement: "This family was originally
of DIXWELL Hall & Lords of the manor of DIXWELL in the county of
Hertford. They possessed this estate until the beginning of the reign
of King Richard when they exchanged it with John of Durham for the
manor of Great Munden, in the same county."

Today I found this- Manor-Great Munden- Old Farm- which reads in part:
" Margaret, wife of Walter OSEVILL, settled manor [1304] on sons, John
& Henry & the heirs of Henry. Henry de OSEVILL died before 1334- widow,
Alice, held 1/3 & his brother John survived him til 1335, 2/3rds--- all
of it to John, son of Henry de OSEVILL. Cecily his daughter & heiress
married Guy de BOYS who held the manor in the right of his wife in
1350. Guy died beofre 1370 in which year Cecily held it alone. After
her death [ no date given] Munden Furnivall seems to have been held by
JOHN & ALICE DURHAM who conveyed it in 1389 to Margaret, daughter of
Cecily & Guy de BOYS & her husband ROBERT DYKESWELL. Margaret married
[2] Henry HAYWARD or HOWARD & [3] before 1419 Walter PEJON or PEGEON.
She was succeeded by Thomas HAYWARD or Howard son of her 2nd husband.

The "High Sheriffs of Buckinghamshire-
Anno 1377- 1 Richard II- Robert DIXWELL Sheriff of Buckinghamshire-
seat- Tingray co., Bedfordshire- arms- A chevron GULES betwixt 3
Fleur de LYS'S sable. He was also sheriff in 1383. The arms of Dixwell
of Coton, Warwickshire & Broome ,Kent are remarkably similar to the
arms of Robert.

It appears that Robert DYKESWELL mentioned in Great Munden is the
DIXWELL Burke refers to" in Dixwell Hall" & Great Munden. Should the
"John & Alice DURHAM [ I have not found anyone by that name[] in the
Great Munden article have read John & Alice of Durham?

Found in the wonderful British Archives catalogue are 3 entries for
DYKESWELL, 2 pertaining to Robert & 1 to Margaret.

Unfortunately I do not have access to these records.

Burke continues after his opening of the DIXWELL family originally
from Dixwell Hall with
," some considerable lapse of time afterwards William DIXWELL ,of
Tingreth ,Bedfordshire having married Margaret SAMPSON ,daughter &
heiress of Adam SAMPSON of Coton, Warwickshire removed from Tingreth."
William was born circa 1430.Thus continues the DIXWELL line.

Does anyone know more about Great MUNDEN or any of the people
listed above,
OSEVILL, De BOYS, HOWARD, PEGEON, FURNIVALL and of course DYKESWELL?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Am I assuming too much in thinking Burke's Dixwell who exchanged
DIXWELLHall for Great Munden is the same as Robert DYKESWELL? I am
hopeful I am on the right track.

Thank you in advance
