I believe the recent article in the _NEHGR_ on Alexander Grant who
married Elizabeth Cheeseborough of Rhode Island mentions a possible
kinship to Sueton Grant and Lodovick Grant, Scottish merchants in or
near Newport, R.I. I believe the article reached no conclusions about
Alexander Grant's ancestry. One of his daughters (? or granddaughters)
married a man named John Coffin Jones (which I found slightly
interesting because of my eight or nine lines from the Coffin family).
Here is an interesting passage in which the names Alexander, Sueton,
and Lodovick Grant all occur:
"Alexander Grant's ancestor [sic] Sir James Grant of Dalvey had been
granted a Nova Scotia baronetcy in 1688, but Sir James died without
children and his brother Ludovick did not assume the dignity.
Ludovick's second cousin and heir, Sueton Grant, also failed to take up
the title and sold the Dalvey estate in Inverness-shire to Patrick
Grant, the son of Donald Grant, Sueton's second cousin in 1701."

_A History of the Episcopal Church in Narragansett, Rhode Island_
reports that Sueton Grant was grandfather maternally to U.S. Senator
Christopher Grant Champlin ...

http://books.google.com/books?vid=LCCN0 ... plin+grant
and that one of Sen. Champlin's sisters married John Coffin Jones:

Thus it seems there may be a few American descendants of Sueton Grant,
as well as of his possible kinsman, Alexander Grant.
(Would anybody like to check the article to see if I'm merely
reinventing the wheel?)

I'd say you're reinventing the wheel after reading NEHGR 156
(2002):373-388. John Coffin Jones was the son of Ichabod Jones and
Apphia Coffin of Newbury, Mass., btw.

Does it mention the bit about Champlin? Was the JCJ who married Miss
Grant the same one who married (? her cousin) Miss Champlin?
Maybe searching Google Books for conjunctions of the names "Sueton,"
"Ludovick / Lodovick," and "Grant" would eventually uncover the
ancestry.

Quite true. But not the Alexander Grant m. Elizabeth Cheeseborough as
far as I know. Alexander Grant of Dalvey (descendant of Patrick Grant
of above) m. Elizabeth Cooke of Jamaica.
Christopher Grant Champlin was the grandson of Capt. Sweton Grant of
Providence. Sweton Grant (of R.I.) had a letter of introduction which
identifies him as a Grant of Gartenbeg (3 secondary sources). The coat
of arms and motto for Grant of Gartenbeg are on his gravestone in R.I.
The Grants of Dalvey and Gartenbeg have a common ancestor. However to
date there is no primary evidence to make the connection.
My notes have daughter of Margaret Champlin m.Benjamin Mason (Margaret
Champlin dau of Christopher Champlin m. Elizabeth Grant dau of Capt.
Sweton Grant) marrying John Coffin Jones. Source "Champlin Memorial: A
