Pennington and Hudleston

As noted in an earlier thread, Sir John Hudleston of Millom (ff 1338)
is stated to have married Maud, the daughter of Sir William Pennington
(e.g. Nicolson & Burns).

An interesting document from the Duchy of Lancaster's records in the
PRO appears to confirm this affiliation:

DL 25/694 20 Richard II [1396-1397]

Thomas de Berdesay to Alan de Penyngton and Catherine his wife: grant
of the manor of Langden, (Cumbria), which he had from William de
Penyngton, with remainders to Richard de Kirkeby and Richard son of
John de Hodilston, knights.

Thomas Bardsey, according the HoP 138601422 Vol IV sub Pennington, was
the guardian of Alan Pennington, son and heir of William Pennington,
during the latter's minority; Catherine was Alan's first wife, an
heiress of the de Preston family.

It would appear that Sir Richard de Kirkeby was a descendant of one of
William Pennington's aunts, while Richard Hudleston was the son of Sir
John Hudleston the younger, the son and heir of Sir John Hudleston by
Maud Pennington; Maud was the sister of William Pennington's father,
John (d c1332).

This document also allows to better date the death of the younger Sir
John Hudleston; in a document of 1398 he is stated to be "lately
deceased", now we know it is likely he was dead by 20 Richard II.
