Leo's great web site

Tudorplace.ar
http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/NEWDIGATE. ... NEWDIGATE1

Neither has much to say about poor Jane Newdigate, except that her son was
Sir William Dormer. This son had at least two daughters, who I show as Jane
Dormer, Countess of Faria and her sister Anne Dormer, wife of Walter Hungerford
of Farley (d bef 15 Jan 1598)

Tudorplace however does have a brief, tangential mention of Jane Newdigate
when it states, on the bio page for Sir William Dormer
http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Bios/WilliamDormer.htm

when it mentions that his mother departed for the Continent, after the death
of Mary (Queen of England) which occurred in 1558.

Furthermore on the page for his daughter Anne Dormer
http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/DORMER.htm#Anne%20DORMER1
it goes into lurid detail about her husband Walter Hungerford's attempt to
divorce her.

Mixed within we see that sometime possibly in or about 1571 she "left England
under a license obtained for her by the Earl of Leicester to visit her dying
grandmother at Louvain"

This cannot refer to her mother's mother Anne Packenham, who died in 1544, so
it must refer to Jane Newdidgate.

So I think the entries for Jane Newdigate should be modified to reflect that
she died in or after 1571.

Dear Will ~

Thank you for your good post. Very informative.

In response to your query regarding Lady Jane (Newdigate) Dormer, a
full biography of her husband, Sir Robert Dormer (born c. 1485/6, died
1552), of Eythrope (in Waddesdon), Buckinghamshire, is found in S.T.
Bindoff, House of Commons, 1509-1558, 2 (1982): 52-53. Bindoff
indicates that Jane (Newdigate) Dormer was the daughter of John
Newdigate, of Haresfield, Middlesex, and that she was living on 20 June
1552, when she was named in her husband's will. Bindoff gives further
mention of Jane (Newdigate) Dormer in the biography of her son, Sir
William Dormer (born by 1514, died 1575), which follows on pages 53-54.
There Bindoff states that Jane (Newdigate) Dormer and her son, Sir
William's daughter, Jane Dormer, Countess of Feria, left for the
Continent in 1559, following the death of Queen Mary Tudor. Bindoff
gives no further particulars of either woman, but he cites the
following two sources which may be helpful to you:

Henry Clifford, Life of Jane Dormer, Duchess of Feria, ed. by Rev.
Joseph Stevenson, pp. 11-14.
Dictionary of National Biography (sub Jane Dormer).

Elsewhere I find there is additional information on Jane (Newdigate)
Dormer in the book, Early Modern Women Poets: An Anthology, by Peter
Davidson and Jane Stevenson, published in 2001, page 113. In this
source, it is stated that "Lady Dormer took herself off to Flanders on
the accession of [Queen] Elizabeth with her granddaughter Jane Dormer,
and settled in Louvain where she lived for twelve years until 1571,
acting as a refuge and harbour for banished priests and English
Catholic gentlemen. Her other granddaughter, Anne, Lady Hungerford,
went out to Louvain the year her grandmother died (separating from her
husband to do so), and took over the household, living on the Continent
for thirty-two years. She [Anne] was a friend of Margaret of Austria,
Duchess of Parma, and died in 1603, probably in old age."

The full book by Davidson and Stevenson can be seen at the following

In summary, the particulars provided by Bindoff and by
Davidson-Stevenson confirm your hunch that Jane (Newdigate) Dormer is
in fact the grandmother of Anne (Dormer) Hungerford who was dying in
1571, in Louvain. For further information regarding Jane (Newdigate)
Dormer, her family, and her exile, see the following weblinks:
