Hi Paul,

I was reading last night and came across the name, or
position of bucularius, or buckler that I thought you might
be interested in. I believe that the suffix, *ley* is from
"Anglo-Saxon roots: ley (-leigh), which means basically,
marshy field" (per taf email dated Nov. 19, 2005), might
have been tacked onto the name used by a buckler.

Charters and Custumals of the Abbey of the Holy Trinity
Caen, Marjorie Chibnall, Glossary: Bucularius is buckler.
In the index, under bucularius are pages 89 and 129.

On page 89:
Surveys: Second Series (B)

Bougy B
De Bogeio

....

footnotes:
[fn3]Ryes, 7 km north-east of Bayeux.
[fn4]Blank space, probably for *avene*.

Page 129 is a footnote to a witness in continuation from a
charter dated January, 1183 from page 128.

The witness footnoted is Rogero de Arreio,[4], footnoted as
[fn4] Arry, 1km west of Bougy, Possibly Roger *bucularius*
of Bougy B.

The scanned pages are attached in a private email.
