Dear Will, Todd, Leo and others,
In William Seymour`s book "
Sovereigh Legacy" p 32-33 Earl Godwin of Wessex is said after the death of
Canute to have adhered at first with the interests of Queen Mother Emma of
Normandy (formerly wife of Ethelred II , King of England) and of Canute`s son
Hardicanute, who had problems to attend to in Denmark while his half brother
Harold acted as regent, whom the Witan wished to elect as King, there was talk of
a shared Kingdom with Civil War looming on the horizon, (1036) when Emma`s
eldest son Alfred who had been banished to Normandy with his brother Edward
suddenly went to visit his mother in Kent with six hundred men following him,
Godwin pretended to be a friend to Alfred, who was fallen on by a band of thugs
Harold had sent and Alfred was blinded , soon after dying. Shortly thereafter
Harold I became king.
Sincerely,

James W Cummings
