Those of you truly interested in the Echyngham family, I am glad to share my research. If truly interested in this family you need to get the book published 1986 by Nigel Saul, well known British historian, "Scenes from Provinical Life- Knightly families in Sussex 1280=1400.. It is out of print, but I was able to read it on a library loan from a local university. It is available and also on Amazon sometimes. Dr Saul has indepth researched theEchyngham family and most of your quetions can be answered.
William who became the first William to become a Knight d 1326. He married an heiress Eva de Stopham and had wealth to be called to parliament. He had a daughter who died early and a bastard son who was sent to Robertbrige monestery.
So the heir was his brother Robert d 1327 who had maarried Petronela Andrews. He died without issue and next brother Simon . was a rector of Herstmonceaux. He died and next heir was son of the 4th brother Richard , who was James.
James d 1349 and his heir was William d 1389, who built the church at Echyngham and married maybe first Marie Shoyswell, 2nd Elizabeth Croil. He built the church and was buried in the church. Shoyswell arms and croil arms on his tomb. His brother John was an academican and received a Doctorate from Oxford His brother Robert married Joan atta Gate of Dixter,. William d1412. was the son of William d 1389 / William 1412 married lst Alice Batisford and 2nd Joan Fitzalan

There were earlier Williams going back to about 1185
This was a quick run down for those of you that said which William. Again if truly interested in this family, the Saul book is a must.
