Hello All,

Two interesting items were noted yesterday concerning Sir Robert
fitz Walter of Little Dunmow, Henham, Essex, & c. (d. 18 Jan 1325/6)
and his ancestry:

1. Entry in the Calendar of Patent Rolls, dated at Carlisle,
7 June 1307:

' Licence for Robert son of Walter, king's kinsman, tenant
in chief - in pursuance of a licence for the executors
of his will to have the custody of his manors of Hemehale
and Disce, co. Norfolk, and Simpling, co. Suffolk, for
four years after his death, for the payment of his debts -
to demise the same for that period. By p.s. ' [1]

~ This entry is interesting, as it indicates that Robert
fitz Walter was a kinsman of King Edward I. This is one
of the entries Linda Jack had referred to some time ago
in an SGM thread [2].

2. Entry in the Calendar of Liberate Rolls, dated at
Westminster, 11 May 1262:

' Liberate to Geoffrey de Lezinan, the king's brother, 76l.
in Westminster, recompense of a like sum received at the
Exchequer of the issues of his manor of ___ by the hands
of Geoffrey de Sancto Medardo, and 40l. in recompense of a
like sum received there of the issues of the manor of
Henham by the hands of Ida Lungespee, all while the said
Geoffrey was beyond seas. ' [3]

The second entry above is extremely interesting, as it is the
first instance I have noted outside the oft-discussed Lacock
cartulary where the name Ida Longespee (or 'Lungespee' as spelled
above) is directly associated with the Fitz Walter family, or in
this case their manor of Henham, Essex. This may not help to
resolve the parentage of this particular Ida Longespee, but it
strongly supports the contention that the kinship of Robert fitz
Walter to the Longespee famiy reflected in the Lacock records is
correct.

Cheers,

John *

Geoffrey de Lezinan is better known as Geoffrey de Lusignan,
a younger son of Hugh X de Lusignan, Comte de La Marche by
Isabella de Angoulême (previously the wife of King John of
England). He was a half-brother of King Henry III of
England, as indicated in the quoted entry.

Dear John ~

Thank you for your good post. Much appreciated.

There are actually two instances, not one, of Robert Fitz Walter being
styled "king's kinsman" in the patent rolls of King Edward I:

Calendar of Patent Rolls, 1301-1307 (1898): 466, 527

The reference to the former page is found in my earlier post dated
April 21, 2003, not in Linda Jack's post dated April 23, 2003. See
copy of my post below.

Lastly, the reference you gave from Calendar of Liberate Rolls
(courtesy of Googlebooks) does not indicate the volume number of the
calendar cited, but it appears to taken from Volume 5 of the published
Liberate Rolls series which was published in 1961.

Dear Newsgroup ~

In earlier posts, I set forth evidence that Ida, wife of Walter Fitz
Robert, was the daughter of William Longespee, Earl of Salisbury, the
illegitimate son of King Henry II. Doing further research in the
contemporary records of this period, I've since located a record in
which Ida's son, Robert Fitz Walter, is specifically called "kinsman"
by King Edward I of England [Reference: Calendar of Patent Rolls,
1301-1307, published 1898, pg. 466]. By my arrangement of the
Longespee family, Robert Fitz Walter and King Edward I would be second
cousins as follows:

King Henry II (died 1189)
/-----------------------------
/ /
King John William Longespee
=Isabel of Angouleme = Ela of Salisbury
/ /
King Henry III Ida Longespee
born 1207 born say 1220
=Eleanor of Provence =Walter Fitz Robert
/ /
King Edward I Robert Fitz Walter
born 1239 born 1247

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
