Can anyone explain the meaning of the word "devisees" that appears
several times in this list of the 1800 Gravesend Land Tax?

A devisee is someone who has inherited an interest in land or other
real property as a consequence of it having been left to them under the
terms of a will.

Technically, personal property is bequeathed, and real property is
devised.

Many thanks. It now makes some sense, though I fail to see why it
would have been necessary to note it on the list.

Probably because the estate was still undergoing administration - i.e.
the legal owner had died and the land had not yet passed to the
devisees, or the identity of the devisees was then unknown to the
compiler of the list.
