I had to look up what happened in 1607. Weren't there earlier French
and Spanish settlements in the now USA?
You may be thinking of the French Huguenot attempt to colonise Florida
in the days of Philip II. This ended in September 1565 when 300 men,
women and children were massacred by Spanish troops under Menéndez "not
because they were French but because they were heretics" as he
charmingly explained on a commemorative plaque. A French expedition a
year or so later took predictable revenge "not on Spaniards but on
traitors, thieves and assassins".
