Could someone tell me when and where the connection is between the
ARUNDELLs of Cornwall and the ARUNDELLs of Sussex, please?

Here's one:

Mary Arundell, dau of Sir John Arundell of Lanherne, Cornwall married
Henry FitzAlan, earl of Arundel on the 19th Dec 1545. Ref Complete
Peerage (CP) Vol XII/1, pp. 519-20.

They are two separate families. In fact, the 'Arundels' of Sussex
properly bore the surname FitzAlan, and 'Arundel" in their case was a
peerage title (Earl of Arundel), although they sometimes used this in
lieu of their surname (eg Archbishop Arundel)

The Fitz Alan family who were Earls of Arundel and Surrey adopted the
surname, Arundel, about 1312-3. Thereafter, all instances of members
of this family, both male and female, occur in records as Arundel,
including Edmund, Earl of Arundel (died 1326). This name change is
explained in depth in Plantagenet Ancestry (2004) and Magna Carta
Ancestry (2005). The statement that this family "properly bore the
surname FitzAlan" is incorrect, at least after 1312-3. This family was
known as Arundel in all branches after 1312-3.

It has been stated in print that the surname Fitz Alan may have been
revived in the 1500's. This could be true, but I haven't yet verified
this claim. The one instance I have of a member of this family in the
1500's used the Arundel surname, not Fitz Alan.

Many thanks for all the replies. I had a feeling that someone
somewhere at some time was trying a little "glorification" by linking
the family I'm interested in with the ARUNDELs of Sussex instead of
the ARUNDELs of Cornwall.
