Hi everyone
I tried sending this message yesterday but it didn't appear. If it does
come through twice I'm sorry!
One branch of my family in Somerset has the surname Templer/Templar. I
have traced them using original records back to a Walter Templer whose
will in 1558 left items for grandchildren so I assume he was born
around 1500/1510. I've seen no earlier records of any of the family but
many Somerset wills were lost in WW2.
As far as I can tell this family doesn't link to any noble family but
they do seem to have been relatively wealthy in their own community in
North Petherton. Comparing notes with fellow Templer family researchers
does make it look as if the Somerset ones may be the origin of the
name.
I have always presumed that the Templer surname is from some servant of
a Templer Knight.
I have been wondering why anyone would have kept the name following the
disbanding of the Knights Templer. With their disgrace surely any
connection with them would have been inadvisable?
I wondered if anyone here has come across any documents mentioning
Templer used as a surname please?
Best wishes
Sue

Re: Templer family
Thank you very much
Some of those look very interesting. The Gloucestershire ones
particularly could be connected.

Re: Templer family
I've just been through the A2A catalogue online and made a great find
which I hadn't spotted before and which I hadn't noticed in many hours
of hunting in the Somerset records Office.
FILE - Abstracts of wills of Templer family: of North Petherton,
Bridgwater and Exeter - ref. DD\X\ADM/5 - date: n.d [1557-1796]
[Notes made by Brig. C.T. Templer at Exeter, 1937]
I'd seen one of the earliest ones (Walter Templer's will) but not these
abstracts. These notes would predate the destruction of wills in WW2 so
that's something I'll be looking at as soon as possible.
Best wishes
