Francis Bacon (1561-1626), Lord High Chancellor

Francis himself has a Cecil number of 4, since his aunt Mildred Cooke, is the
daughter-in-law of Richard Cecil

In the old DNB entry for Francis Bacon it states that on 10 May 1604 he
married Alice Barnham, a younger daughter of Benedict Barnham whose widow married
Sir John Packington.

Then checking the old DNB entry for Benedict Barnham it states that this wife
was Dorothy Smith the daughter of Humphrey Smith, "silkman to Queen Elizabeth"

Leo http://www.genealogics.org/getperson.ph ... 8&tree=LEO is
showing just the one daughter Elizabeth Barnham who married Mervyn Touchet the
Earl of Castlehaven (beheaded in 1631).

Dear Will
Do you have access to CP ? Volume XI pages 282-285 cover Francis Bacon

It tells that Dorothy was daughter of Humphrey or Ambrose Smith, and in a
footnote she married four times, her last husband Thomas Erskine, 1st Earl
of Kellie.

We know now as husbands Benedict Barnham, Sir John Packington and Thomas
Erskine

CP under Kellie gives the missing husband Robert Needham, 1st Viscount
Kilmorey (who died November 1631 and she was his 4th wife)

This entry also gives the order of her husbands 1.Benedict Barnham, 2 Sir
John Packington 3.Robert Needham 4.Thomas Erskine.

But what is the name of her father? the Kellie entry reverses the names and
indicate he was Ambrose or Humphrey Smith, of Cheapside, London, Silkman.

Thanks for steering me into this direction.
