Looking for information on the Eden family

Hello again,

I'm looking to see if there are any good sources out there for finding
information on the ancestors/family of Sir Robert Eden, 1st Baronet of
West Auckland. All I've been able to find so far is ancestry file
numbers from familysearch.org. What I have read so far is this:

That his parents were John Eden (1616-1675) and Katherine Layton
(1618-1686).

John Eden's parents were Robert Eden (1590-1662) and Anne Bier
(1594-?).

Robert Eden's parents were John Eden (1571-1625) and Margery Welbury
(1575-?).

John Eden's parents were Robert Eden (1548-?) and Jane Hutton (1552-?)

And so on, and so forth...

I'm trying to connect a possible daughter of Sir Robert Eden, Margaret
Eden (1673-?) with Marjory Welbury, the possible daughter of Anthony
Welbury (1549-?) and Anne Bulmer (1552-1624).

The information could be accurate, or it could be a lot of phooey.
Ancestry.co.uk does not seem to have much information on them except
user made family trees. I would think that with Castle Eden being an
important site in Durham there would be more concrete information out
there, but its all the same trees.

Any ideas of where to start?

I am the fortunate owner of a book published in 1907 by the Rev. Robert
Allen Eden.
It has a folding family tree in the back which seems to give all children.
Sir Robert Eden, 1st Baronet, seems to have had only one child, the 2nd
Baronet and the 2nd Baronet also had only one son, the 3rd Baronet.

The Robert Eden you give as furthest ancestor is generation seven on this
family tree. All the details of the further ancestors you can find on my
website http://www.genealogics.org

Margaret Eden (1673-?) of course could be illegitimate. According to this
book the legitimate son of Sir Robert Eden, 1st Baronet, was born about
1677. The Complete Baronetage Volume IV page 53, gives "probably about
1680", and Robert 1st Baronet as born about 1644 old enough to father an
illegitimate child.

Hope this helps?
With best wishes

If the book that Leo mentions is the one titled "Some Historical Notes on
the Eden Family", it is listed in the FHL catalog and has been filmed and
thus should be available through your local FHC. More conveniently, it is
also on-line via the BYU collection and can be accessed by a clickable link
in the FHL catalog. It even includes the folding pedigree that Leo
mentions, although it's a bit difficult to view the latter using BYU's
reader. Oh, well...shouldn't complain...

Dear John,
I am sure it is the same book. In the copy I have there is also a
handwritten pedigree covering later generations (almost falling apart) and a
portrait of a lady I do not know who she is.

The folded pedigree is vary basic in information but a great help and does
give names of (apparent) unmarried siblings.

Excellent! This information was very helpful. At least I confirm that a
good chunk of the family tree is accurate, even if the two connection
points are still dubious. I will definately hunt down a copy of that
book, and see if I can't find out some information about this family. I
must admit though that the idea that Robert only had one child is a bit
bothersome as the tree I've got shows that he had 15! I would think
that given how long both he and Margaret Lambton lived that this
"could" be possible, but I'm going to have to dig in order to find out.
Thank you greatly for your web site, Leo and information Leo--they were
a God-send.

Just finished reading over the book you mentioned dealing with the
Edens (found online through BYU--very nice of them to have that
available in pdf format) and although the tree at the end does not list
the children of Sir Robert Eden, 1st Bart. other than Sir John Eden,
the author DOES say this on page 30 of the text, in regards to the 1st
Bart, "His wife was Margaret, daughter of John Lambton, of the City of
Durham, by whom he had eight sons and seven daughters." This would
match up to the listed tree that gives him 15 children, but I still do
not know where the tree got the names of these children. The hunt
continues!
