Extracts from the Calendar of Inquisitions Post Mortem, Edward III, Vol

"Writs dated 30 September 49 Ed III: Henry de Coggeshale, knight, and
Joan his wife; Joan died the Friday before Michaelmas last; William her

William de Welles, knight. Joan died 27 September last and Henry 29
September. At Essex, they held the manor of Great Sampford, the manor,
advowson and ferry rights at East Tilbury; William their heir was aged
18 at the feast of St Margaret last; also held the manor of Pakelsham,
the manor and advowson of Hakewell; the manor of Ruggeweerde in Great

Super information, thnks.

It looks as if Joan Welle was her father's sole heir. What do you
think?

Yes, I agree. Confirmation may be found in Joan's Proof of Age [PRO C
135/113/16], a copy of which Kelly Leighton kindly sent me last year
and which I have since extracted in further detail: in this she is
called daughter and heir of William de Welles.

Is anything known about William de Welle [or Welles], the father of Joan?
Is he possibly connected to the family of the Barons Welles? Is his spouse
known?

John,

The Welle family was of Great Sampford, Essex. There does not appear to be a
connection to the baronial Welles family. This family has been discussed
extensively in the archives. Joan's ancestry includes the Kemesek, Polstead
and Chaundos families.

In addition to what was shared in the archives, VCH Cambridge and Copinger
can help fill in her ancestry.
