Goddards of Leicester

Legg inn av Gjest » 05 mai 2006 04:45:18

According to the IGI at the LDS site Elyzabeth Godderd was Christened 22
August 1590 at Claybrook, Leicester, England, the daughter of John Godderd and
Jonne. According to the IGI John Goddard and Jonne Hariot were married 13 May
1586 at Claybrook, Leicester, England.

Where could I find more about the Leicestershire Goddards and their
connections?

I've tried _Wills and Adminsitrations_and _ Leicestershire Marriage Licenses_
by Henry Hartopp. I've tried _ The Victoria History of the County of
Leicester_ Vol. 1 to 6, but found the last volume missing in the local library.

Thank you,

Ron Brennan

Unfortunately there isn't a volume 6 of the Leicestershire VCH.
Volumes 1-4 are general county history, and the only volume of
individual parish histories is vol. 5, which covers Gartree Hundred -
but the Claybrookes are in Guthlaxton Hundred. (Efforts are presently
underway to reactivate the Leics VCH, but they are unlikely to produce
a new volume for many years).

Details of extant VCH volumes for any county, and the parishes they
cover, can be obtained via the VCH website at
http://www.englandpast.net/ (use the <About our Books> link, then
<Coverage of the VCH>).

Where to look for your Goddards depends very much on their social
status. The VCH is generally only informative about families who owned
manors or substantial sub-manorial holdings, and the same is largely
true of the other great Leicestershire source, Nichols' History and
Antiquities of the County of Leicester (4 volumes, each in 2 parts,
Wakefield, 1795-1811, republ. 1971 by Leics CC). Gentry families can
also be found in the heralds' Visitations.

For families of slightly lower social status George Farnham's six
volume Leicestershire Medieval Village Notes (Leicester, 1928-33) may
be useful, and also the briefer
Leicestershire Medieval Pedigrees (1925). The former has extracts from
a large number of medieval and early modern sources such Lay Subsidy
Rolls, Fines, Hearth Tax rolls - many of which catch sub-gentry
families - for nearly every parish in Leicestershire, arranged by
parish (though unfortunately not indexed - but it can be bought on CD).

I don't think anyone has published a detailed study of the Claybrookes,
so for sub-gentry families in the 16C there are otherwise only the
usual original sources - parish registers, wills, manorial and estate
records etc.

The Goddard Society of Europe has published a series of monographs
about various English Goddard families - I can't recall this including
a Leicestershire volume, but will check if you wish. There is also a
volume of extracted Goddard wills from a variety of English probate
jurisdications which you may be able to access.

It might be worthwhile submitting a similar query to their Journal
editor for publication, in case it enables you to get in touch with
other researchers with interests in the same area or family. I can
arrange this for you if you like.

I also have lists of the contents of the published VCH volumes (and
unpublished material on the VCH websites) here:
http://www.medievalgenealogy.org.uk/vch/index.shtml

These are rather more detailed than the official ones, as they include
religious houses and schools. There's also a search facility.

I would say don't restrict your parish register searches to the I.G.I.,
which should only be used as a finding aid. Look at the parish register
entries, not forgetting the Bishop's Transcripts, which in the Diocese Of
Lincoln often go back to an early date, sometimes about 1560.

Indexes are available to abstracts of wills in the Archdeaconry of
Leicester, while the Leics. wills proved in P.C.C. can be seen online
(National Archives).
