Dear all,

I think I'm finally starting to straighten out the lines of my
Hockenhull/Fells ancestry.

Margaret Hockenhull was the daughter of William Hockenhull of Prenton, by
Margery/Margaret Hurleston, daughter of James Hurleston of Chester, and is
named in William Hockenhull's will. According to his will, and Ormerod,
Margaret Hockenhull had siblings:

John married Margaret Hockenhull, dau. of Peter Hockenhull of Hockenhull.
Their daughter Katherine married Edward Moore of Bankhall, Esq., Co. Lanc
and were parents of the regicide, John Moore. Edward Moore was buried 1
December 1632, in the parish church of St. Michael's, Stone, Staffordshire.
After John Hockenhull's death on 23rd April 1590, (buried 26 April 1590 at
Holy Cross, Woodchurch), at the end of a pitchfork in Chester Castle in the
hands of his gaoler, Margaret Hockenhull re-married to Edward Ravenscroft
(by a seminary priest). Margaret Ravenscroft was buried on 22 April 1613 at
Holy Cross, Woodchurch.

Elizabeth married William Dod of Chester, Merchant, Gentleman

Anne married Roger Glegg of Caldey Grange

Katherine married Francis Burges of Prenton

Ralph )
William ) No information
Laurence)
Rowland )

Alice married Thomas Coventry of Noctorum and Newhouse. Their daughter
Alice Coventry married Robert Bennett of Upton. Their daughter Ann Bennett
married John Fells of Bidston, son of Stephen Fells and Jane Wright, brother
of William Fells of Bidston, Merchant and Steward to the Bidston Estates of
the Earl of Derby.

Margaret Hockenhull, above, had two husbands before her marriage to William
Fells. Edward Marten and John Jones, by whom she had a son Henry Jones.
She also had a daughter Katherine to one of these first husbands. In her
1623 will, she names her executor Thomas Coventry of Noctorum. In Henry
Jones 1619 will, he mentions his "kinsman Thomas Coventry".

It was Margaret's daughter, Katherine, who married John Bruerton/Brereton of
Moreton, and by his Will in 1608 had five children, John, Thomas, Margaret,
Mary and Anne. Catheren, his wife, and John, his son, to be executors. The
overseer to his will was Edward Gwynne, his "friend and Gossip". Edward
Gwyn was also appointed overseer to the 1603 Will of William Fells.
Katherine Brereton re-married to Henry Willcock in 1615.

Three of John & Katherine Bruerton's children, John, Thomas and Mary
Brereton, were left bequests in the will of Margaret Fells in 1623, as were
their Willcock half siblings.

John Bruerton/Brereton's eldest son John Brererton, left a will in 1664
where he mentions John Wilcocke of the Ford, and Nathanael and William Jones
(who were sons of Henry Jones above).

In William Fells' 1603 will (although he didn't die until 1612), he left his
lands in Leighton in equal shares between "Margaret my wife, Henry Jones her
son and Cecily Fells my daughter. Another overseer was Thomas Coventry of
Knocktorum.

I would be very interested if anyone has any details on the ancestry of John
Bruerton/Brereton of Moreton, who died 1608.

Regards,
Yvonne Purdy (nee Sherlock)
