Lord(s) of the Manor of Benenden.

I'm stuck and have been advised by a nice person on
soc.genealogy.britain that someone here may be able to help.

Ok. My own family tree traces back to Richard Brenchley who died in
1514/15 in Bicknor, Kent.

However, I have a lot of unconnected Brenchleys which I'm always
trying to link. It is about two of these that I would welcome any help
someone can give.

I have John Brenchley married to Margaret Golding. Father of John may
be James with the surname spelt "Brenchele" I have John born about
1515 and Margaret born about 1520. John is recorded as being Lord of
the Manor of Benenden.

I also have Sir William Brenchley (born unknown, died Bef. 26 May
1406) and Johanne (or Joan) Batisford (born unknown, died Bef. 7
November 1453)

Problem is the IGI index through http://www.familysearch.org for John and
Margaret produce a wide range of dates so I'm looking for anything
that can confirm dates.

I've been quoted this "If we can believe Edward Hasted's History of
Kent (1793), the manor of Benenden was passed on via a female heiress,
Joane de Benenden (who died without issue in 1453), she having married
Sir William Brenchley, chief justice of common pleas (d. 1446). It
thereafter passed to Margaret, the daughter and coheir of John
Brenchley, esq., by Margaret Golding, his wife (she being the daughter
and heiress of Richard Golding). Margaret Brenchley married William
Moore (during the 21st year of King Henry VI) and the manor thereafter
continued for some time in the Moore/More/de la More family."

Does anyone have any information or ideas? Would a list of the Lords
of the Manor be recorded somewhere?

Thanks in advance.

Bob Brenchley, Gloucester.

Hello Bob,

the usual source for past lords of a manor is the Victoria County
History for the county concerned - this will contain a chapter on each
parish, which will include an account of the history of each manor in
the parish. Unfortunately not all county histories have been
completed, and Kent is particularly badly served - no volumes of
individual parish histories have yet been published (three volumes of
general county history were produced early last century, but since then
the VCH Kent has been dormant - though it has recently been reactivated
so parish history volumes may start to appear in a few years time).

I don't think anyone has written a freestanding history of Benenden, so
short of an investiagtion in the original manorial records (if they
have survived) the best source for its manorial history is Hasted's
History and Topographical Survey of the County of Kent, which you have
been told about. Notwithstanding the caution expressed in the passage
you quoted, we probably can believe it - Hasted has quite a good
reputation. Professor Alan Everitt, himself a notable historian of
Kent who had often had occasion to check Hasted's accuracy, spoke
highly of it in his introduction to the 1972 reprint of the History.
It does have some errors but, considering its massive size and the
relatively early date at which it was written, they are remarkably few.

Matt Tompkins
