The Stewards were cousins to the Lord Protector (their alleged Scottish
ancestry is most definitely false).

I'm thinking that there was a long article on the Steward family
someplace in _Proceedings of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society_ ...
But what about these Lawrences of St. Albans? Are these the ones
ancestral to the Giddings-Lawrence immigrant cluster?

This will (excerpts below) may be of interest as showing a relationship
between some Lawrences and Arnolds at St. Albans --
from _Diary of John Manningham of the Middle Temple_ (Camden Soc., vol.
99), pp. 172-76:
ABSTRACT OF WILL OF RICHARD MANNINGHAM, DATED 21ST JANUARY 1611-12; 9TH
JAMES I.
I Richard Manningham, of the parish of East Malling, co. Kent, gent.
being in tolerable health of body in regard of mine age and infirmities
....
--To the poor inhabitants of St. Alban's, where I was born, 10L.
--To Gregory Arnold, eldest son of my late half-sister Elizabeth
Arnold, 10 L.
--To Marie Lawrence and Sara Peters, daughter of the said Elizabeth
Arnold, 10 L. a piece.
--To the four daughters of Marie Lawrence, 10 L. a piece.
--I remit all moneys owing to me by William Kent, John Kent, Roger
Kent, Nicholas Kent, Drewe Kent, and Stephen Kent, all sons of my
aforesaid half-brother Robert Kent; and by George Arnold, Barnaby
Lawrence and Jacob Peters, sons-in-law of my late half-sister Elizabeth
Arnold ...
--Lastly, I give to my kinsman John Arnold of St. Alban's, and to my
kinsman Richard Lawrence of Maidstone, and to my maid-servant Annis
Hull, and to their heirs for ever, my thirty acres of land called
Larkhall in Hadlow or elsewhere in Kent, lately purchased of Thomas
Tutsom, now in the occupation of John Bredger, to be equally divided
between them, and I give to each of them 20 nobles in money.

Dave Greene's article in TG 10 noted the chronological problem in
identifying the John Lawrence who married Elizabeth Bull in 1579, and
who was grandfather of the immigrants, as the man who was baptized at
Saint Albans in 1562. The 1562 John presumably descend from the various
Visitation families as you've mentioned, but it is unlikely he's the
immigrants' grandfather. I do not know whether Dave's or anyone else's
subsequent unpublished research has positively identified the
immigrants' grandfather John Lawrence's parentage.

Yeah, I don't know much about these Lawrences, just that they married
with Arnold and Bull ...
