4th Hubbard Question

Leslie et al.:

Since I blundered in asking my other Hubbard question (writing "Robert" for "Richard" as the name of William Hubbard's father), I expect that this thread has rapidly dwindling interest for people on the list. However, I ask this anyway, on the principle that it never hurts to ask:

Does anyone know whether the present Bottles Hall in Elmstead Market is identical to the Bottles Hall which is listed in the birth record of (some) William Hubbard in 1589 in the Little Clacton parish record? If it is, my question is why the baptism occurred so far from the residence in Elmstead. The same record shows a William Hubbard of Bottle Hall, widower, marrying a widow, Margaret Andrews, in 1590, and, in the same year, "Old William Hubbard of Bottles Hall" died. (Some William Hubbard left 100 pounds for the poor of Little Clacton in 1596, according to the web-site history of Little Clacton.)

In my first posting I expressed ignorance of my source for William Hubbard's origins: Little Clacton is given as the place of origin of William Hubbard, husbandman, in the 1630 list of passengers, and the age is given as 40---all of which suggests to me that the William Hubbard born to Richard Hubbard of Bottles Hall is the New England passenger. However, I am out of my territory in all of this.

The mother of William Hubbard appears to be a Susan Colman---if I read correctly the 1581 record of her marriage to Richard Hubbard, a supposition which is clearly perilous. I can email scans of these documents to anyone who is curious.

Regards,

Richard Smyth
