It seems that this is referencing two Jane Eltonheads. One is Thomas'
mother, Jane (Fenwick) (Smith) (Taylor) Eltonhead. Who is the other Jane?
Thomas didn't have any Eltonhead half-siblings, did he? Could this other
Jane be an aunt? Maybe this would help identify the parents of the William
Eltonhead who was executed in 1655.

Dear Vickie,

Thank you so much for your correction about Jane Gerrard. As you noted she
was in actuality Jane Fenwick the wife of (1) Thomas Smith (2) Thomas Taylor
(3) William Eltonhead.

The point you brought up about which William Eltonhead was married to Jane
Fenwick deserves a thread of its own.

There seems to be much confusion over the actual identity of William
Eltonhead who owned several thousand acres of land in St. Mary's County,
Maryland and was executed by the Puritans after being captured in the Battle
of Severn on March 25, 1655.

1. The will of Cuthbert Fenwick dated March 6, 1654 refers to "brother
Eltonhead". This could mean either " the brother of his wife Jane Eltonhead"
or "the husband of his sister Jane Fenwick". This is a non- definitive
document which can interpreted to support the case for either son or brother
of Richard Eltonhead of Prescott, Lancashire.

2. In 1664 three separate cases were brought before the Provincial Council
of Maryland involving the will and estate of William Eltonhead. A verbal
will was testified to by John Anderton, who later married William
Eltonhead's step-daughter Gertrude Smith. According to Anderton, William
Eltonhead left his estate to his wife Jane Fenwick Eltonhead with
remembrances to Richard and Robert Fenwick, sons of Cuthbert Fenwick, and
therefore his nephews. The other two suits deal with the disposition of
land called " Rich Neck" which according to Thomas Taylor, step-son of
William Eltonhead, was left to him when his mother died and John Anderton
was a tenant of this property. The case was finally decided in Anderton's
favor as no written will was located for William Eltonhead. None of these
suits show any indication of William Eltonhead's ancestry.

3. Edward Eltonhead also resided in St. Mary's County, Maryland. He held
the manor of "Great Eltonhead" which was a grant of 5000 acres that he was
given in 1652. He also held a warrant for another 10,000 of land which he
asked that William Eltonhead put through channels for him. William
Eltonhead held the manor of "Little Eltonhead" which was 2000 acres granted
to him in 1649 [Letter patent granted in 1648]. According to "Virginia
Genealogies - A Genealogy of the Glassell Family," by Rev. Horace Edwin
Hayden (Genealogical Pub. Co., Baltimore, 1966) p.228: Edward Eltonhead was
of Hadem Ham in the Isle of Ely and also Examiner High Court of Chancery.
Noel Currier-Briggs places Edward Eltonhead as the Brother of Richard
Eltonhead of Lancashire and therefore the son of William Eltonhead by his
wife Anne Bowers. He was buried June 6, 1660 in Temple Church, London. He
left a PCC will dated 16 September 1657 in which he named his brothers John
Eltonhead and Richard Eltonhead. He refers to his nephew William Eltonhead,
son of His brother John Eltonhead as still alive. He also refers to his
cousin William Eltonhead of the Middle Temple [ he died and left a PCC will
dated 1662]. This also does not answer the question of William Eltonhead's
ancestry.

Would anyone with other documentation please post it so we can attempt to
resolve this.

Best regards,
MichaelAnne
