Dear Newsgroup ~

In a letter dated 1367 Marguerite of France, Countess of Flanders,
Artois, and Burgundy referred to the Bishop of Thérouanne as her
cousin ("nostre cousin l'evesque de Therouenne") [Reference: Duchet &
Giry, Cartulaires de l'église de Térouane (1881): 243-244]. This
document may also be viewed online at the following weblink:

http://books.google.com/books?vid=OCLC2 ... eury+Ansel].

Marguerite of France (died 1382) was the wife of Louis II, Count of
Flanders, and daughter of King Philippe V of France (died 1322), by his
wife, Jeanne of Burgundy.

So far, I've been unable to identify the Bishop of Thérouanne in
question. Does anyone know the Bishop's name and parentage?

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah

This particular Bishop of Thérouanne (in 1367) is pretty well known. He was
Robert of Geneva [or de Genève if you prefer], who subsequently became a
cardinal and then (in 1378) Pope Clement VII, the first Avignon pope of the
Western Schism. It should be easy to find biographical information on him
in any general encyclopedia, and his relationship to the Savoy house (and
probably from there to France) is easily traced in standard genealogical
works - as well as (more quickly) on Leo's web site.
