Dear Renia, Chris, John, Alex, Will, et al.,

On the matter of Piers/Peter de Brus being referred to as
'the third', there are other instances of use of the designation
as applied to individuals. The one I recalled, and have notes
concerning same, being William d'Aubigny of Belvoir, Leics.
(d. 1 May 1236), best known as a Surety of the Magna Carta.

1. ' Charter of William de Alben[eio] the third giving to
Belvoir Priory, for the weal of his lord king Henry, etc.,
the church of Uffyngton, which the lady Cecily his
grandmother had previously given it.
Testibus hiis: Ricardo capellano de Wilb' deston' Eodem
(sic) scriptore; Waltero clerico. ' [1]

2. ' Willielmus de Albiniaco tertius', granted to Belvoir priory
one sheaf of every kind of grain raised on his lands in
Belvoir, 'Wlstorp' and others, ca. 1230, naming his former
wife Margery and present wife Agatha; witnessed by his sons
'Willielmo de Albineio quarto, Odinello, Roberto et Nicholao,
filiis meis' [2]

The text in the second instance I have just now verified
reads,

" Universis sanctae matris ecclesiae filiis ad quos
praesens scriptum pervenerit, Willielmus de Albiniaco
tertius salutem. "

This does not address the specific instance of Piers/Peter
de Brus, but does demonstrate the designation of 'tertius'
being applied to this particular individual in this same era.
A read of the specific text concerning de Brus himself would
be most useful.

Cheers,

John *
