John Berkeley / Katherine Devereux

On this website
http://www.southfarm.plus.com/berkeley/ ... 33_090.htm

we see that Tim Powys-Lybbe in 2003 had this marriage between
John Berkeley, younger son of Sir William Berkeley (ca1436-<1501) and Anne
Stafford
and his wife being Katharine Deverox [Devereux], dau of Sir Richard Devereux
(-1547) and Dorothy Hastings

But I question this.

This John I have with a birthrange of 1453/1502, since I don't have any very
good information about his mother just yet. However his alleged wife
Katherine Devereux has a birthrange of 1537/48. So she was at the very least 35 years
younger than he was. Her father Richard died 13 Oct 1547 and since he was
the son of Walter Devereux, 1st Viscount Hereford, Richard himself has a
birthrange of 1505/22 which greatly restricts when his children could be born.

Comments appreciated.

I put in my Notes to Katherine that I was not convinced about her
parentage. The words in Smyth's "Lives of the Berkeleys", p. 267, are:

"The foresaid John Berkely of Bradley, younger brother of the said
Richd Berkeley of Stoke, by Katharine his wife daughter of Sr Richard
Deverox, lord Ferrars, had issue James Berkeley of Bradley, who by
Joyce his wife daughter of Mr Pettit had issue John, Brice, Joyce, jane
and Anne."

The problem with this is that there was no Richard Deverox who was lord
Ferrars. So I assumed he was referring to the Richard who dvp
as son of the Walter Devereux who was Viscount Hereford and thus had
Ferrers as a junior title which his son Richard might have used as a
courtesy title in the lifetime of his father.

Or, of course, Smyth could have got it all wrong. No documents are
cited for this paragraph.

Or it could be that Katharine was the daughter of an earlier marriage
of Richard Deverox styled lord Ferrars.
