Hi all,

Sir Ralph Shirley of Ettington Warw. etc. (s/o Sir Hugh Shirley d 1403) apparently held the manor of Swepston, Leics when an indenture dated 1427 between Thos Okeover et al and Sir Ralph Shirley and wife Alice (Cockayne) identified Swepstone as belonging to Shirley. [source: Shirley of Ettington Archives 26D53/540 ] In 1477, Shirley was identified as "Sir Ralph Shirley of Swepston" [26D53/427 b Shirley of Ettington Archive].

The manor lands appear next in the posession of a previously unidentified Thomas Shirley in 1488:

Inquisitions Henry VII

1488 -#343. Thomas Sherley writ 2 Oct Inq. 21 Apr 3 Henr VII. He died 20 Sept 2 Hen VII seized of the under mentioned manors and advowson. Hugh Shirley age 18 and more, is his cousin and heir viz son of Hugh Shirley, his brother. Holding Leicestershire manors of Suepston in Suepston, Newenton and Nethercote [Newton Nethercote] worth 10 pounds and the Advowson fo the church of Suepston held of Edmund Earl of Kent by service of 1/6 of a knights fee.

Can anyone shed any light on the history of the manor of Swepstone, Leics.? Was it held by Cockayne family prior to the Shirleys?

best

Ken S.
