Another gateway ancestor? This Tuttle family had manorial estate in
Ringstead and Thrapton
Symon Tuttle/Toothill/Tuthill
b. 1560, Ringstead, Northamptonshire, England
d. 15 Jun 1630, Thrapton, Northamptonshire, England
son of Richard Tuttle/Toothill and Elizabeth (Bloomfield?? - saw this
name first time today, showed up in WorldConnect dated 31 March 2006)
wife, Isabel Wells
1571, Ringstead
dau of John Wells/Welles and ?
Symon left will naming some sons and one daughter.
1. Dorothy (Dorothie)(abt 1592/1593), married John Bill
2. Richard (abt 1594)
3. Henry
4. Thomas
5. John (25 Oct 1607)
6. William (bap. 29 Oct 1609), married Elizabeth Mathews(abt 1612-30 Dec
1684)
other sons, Henry and John
all emigrated to Connecticut after death of Symon and Isabel accompanied
the sons, except John who stayed behind and died 3 Dec 1856 in Holcot.
(other claim that he died in Carrickfergus, Ireland). His daughter Sarah
married Richard Martyn. They went to Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The
other daughter, Abigail (1628-1674), married John Meader and went to
Oyster River, New Hampshire.
I will have to check that will record again. I found this will before
Internet exists so the record isn't transcribed and noted in my
database. (William is my line)
Richard Tuthill (wife Elizabeth Bloomfield (?), see above)
1 of several daughters and one son named Symon
Elizabeth married Thomas Payne/Paine, their children
1. Mary Paine married Philemon Dickerson - emigrated to Salem, Essex,
Massachusetts and finally settled in Southold, New York.
2. Thomas Paine married Rebecca Peck then Mary Snow. Settled in Eastham
Barnstable county, Massachusetts.
note on Mary Snow....
daughter of Nicholas Snow and Constance Hopkins. Constance's mother was
falsely claimed to be Constance Dudley. This was brazen disproved with
hard evidence it was Mary (surname unknown), see Mayflower website
explaining the evidence. (I have seen the microfilmed original probate
record of Mary Hopkins, listed as widow, assumed that Stephen Hopkins
died in Virginia.) More details on this family in separate message.

This above extensive pedigree is from Dan Stonecypher
I saw one claim more than 10 years ago that Elizabeth Matthews was of
nobility/royalty descent. I wrote to that man who was living on island
west of Seattle, Washington for proof of it and got instead, request
that I pay him for research.

I believe I have a line from the Meaders of Oyster River (through
Wakeham, Jones, Houston, Porter, etc.). I did not know they were
related to the Tuttles.

Not manorial estate! They were yeomen! Heavens!
See http://www.geocities.com/tiggernut24/Re ... uttle.html
The family did carry manic depression. In my extensive experience, one way
to spot my ancestral lines that carried that gene is modern delusions of
grandeur!
But in this case, there could be more than one reason to focus on
genealogical tales of ancient grandeur! The first two generations in this
country had a noted tendency to flip out and take axes to family members.

John Tuttle did indeed immigrate, and did not "stay behind". His name
appears on the passenger record for "The Planter", sailing 1635. They
boarded in St. Albans, Herts with his wife Joan, and children Abigail,
Simon, Sarah, and John. His mother-in--law, Joan (Arnold) Antrobus
also boarded with them, and three step-children.
"Planter 1635:
Jo: Tuttell A Mercer 39
Joan Tuttell 42
John Lawrence 17
Wm Lawrence 12
Marie Lawrence 9
Abigall Tuttell 6
Symon Tuttell 4
Sam Tuttell 2
Jo: Tuttell 1
Joan Autrobuss 65 "
And yes, he did return and die in Carrickfergus, Ireland.

Re: Tuthill/Toothill and Welles/Wells
Dear Dora,
Yes, the Tuttles did have a tendency of wigging out.
But there was also a tendency to high intelligence.
These two tendencies did not express themselves in the
same individual, necessarily.
There was an article on this, probably in TAG, and
probably by Donald Lines Jacobus.
