In a submission to _Notes & Queries_, 6th series (Dec. 1885), William
Sargent of Portland, Maine, noted a clue to the origin in England of
Richard Wharton, a prominent mid- seventeenth-century immigrant to
Massachusetts Bay. Sargent pointed out records showing that Richard
Wharton was the brother of a certain Dorothy Pack of co. Middlesex,
England, whose will mentions her brother Richard, and the fact that she
was born at Warcupp, co. Westmorland.

The extracted IGI does in fact show such a birth ...

Warcop, Westmorland

Dorothye Wharton, dau. of Humfray, bapt. 30 May 1638

There is also record of a Richard, *son of Richard*, baptized 21 Feb.
1637. The father's name may be in error here, as the records of
Boston, Mass., show the baptism of Humphrey Wharton, son of Richard and
Bethiah, on 5 Aug. 1666.

Savage's _Dictionary_ mentions Richard Wharton's daughter Sarah, who
married John Cotta. This Cotta-Wharton marriage is confirmed by the
Higginson letters [_Collections of the Massachusetts Historical
Society_, 3rd series, vol. 7 (1838)].

I notice that John and Sarah Cotta were living in the Cornhill section
of Boston in 1722, and that Sarah Cotta was living there by herself in
1728.

Does anybody know if John and Sarah had descendants? Did Richard
Wharton have other children who married and had descendants?

The book on the Higginsons spurred me to check some of their births in
the IGI ... with quite interesting results...

RCA, in the _GMB_ sketch of Rev. Francis1 Higginson, gives the
following baptisms for the children:

1. JOHN (twin), bp. Claybrooke, Leicestershire, 31 August 1616
2. THEOPHILUS (twin), bp. Claybrooke 31 August 1616
3. FRANCIS, bp. Claybrooke 16 August 1618
4. TIMOTHY, bp. Claybrooke 5 November 1620
5. SAMUEL, bp. Claybrooke 15 December 1622
6. MARY, bp. Claybrooke 27 December 1624
7. ANNE, bp. St. Mary's, Leicester 28 January 1626[/7]
8. CHARLES, b. say 1628
9. NEOPHYTUS, b. say 1630

Oddly, the extracted records of St. Nicholas, Leicester, also give some
of these births ==

1. John Higginson, son of Francis, born Aug. 1616, bapt. 16 Aug. 1618
2. Theophilus Higginson, son of Francis, born Aug. 1616, bapt. 16 Aug.
1618
3. Francis Higginson, son of Francis, bapt. 16 Aug. 1618
4. Timothee Higginson, son of Francis, bapt. 5 Nov. 1620
5. Samuell Higginsone, son of Francis, bapt. 15 Dec. 1622
6. Marye Higginson, dau. of Francis, bapt. 27 Dec. 1624
7. Anne Higginson, dau. of Francis, born 21 Jan. 1627, bapt. 28 Jan.
1627
8. Charles Higginson, son of Francis, bapt. 16 Nov. 1628
