Renia brings up the Da Vinci Code.

Does anyone know what has happened to the court case against Dan Brown?

I always understood that you could not copyright a title or a plot.......the
Da Vinci Movie with Tom Hanks has already been made and apparently they
cannot show it until that court case is settled.
Best wishes

You been reading the Da Vinci Code?

As I understand it the case is still going forward (there was a story
about Dan Brown testifying in the news today). Perhaps the most annoying
thing in the news about the trial is that all of the stories and reporters
seem to take it for granted that the work of Baigent and Leigh (and
Lincoln) is the factual "history" as opposed to the fiction of Brown, both
only opposed by religious leaders on religious grounds (not acknowledging
the strong opposition by historians and genealogists). Ironically,
though, Baigent and Leigh seem to tacitly acknowledge that their work is
in the same area as Brown's--fiction with enough historical setting to
make it seem historical. I am no lawyer, but it seems that the plot and
"facts" of a work of fiction would be more copyrightable than true
historical facts, which should not be copyrightable at all.

Years ago I worked with an Australian author. Before we started working
together he published a book (A Waltz Through The Hills, filmed with Ernie
Dingo in the main role) the plot being two children who run away after being
orphaned and threatened with separation by being placed in a boys and a
girls orphanage.

The same year two other books with a very much similar plot appeared.

He also wrote a book A Change of Mind, the plot was pinched but altered, by
turning one into a negro, the title changed to Change of Mind.......and
nothing could be done

A heaavy-handed reference to the many unusual court cases reported by
Beachcomber, the cases were always before Mr Justice Cocklecarrot and
frequently interrupted by the appearance of 12 red-bearded dwarves in the
witness box

eg

The court had to be cleared owing to the roars of ribald laughter which
greeted the appearance in the witness-box of the twelve red-bearded dwarfs
all in a heap. Their names were read out amid growing uproar. The names
appeared to be: Sophus Barkayo-Tong, Amaninter Axling, Farjole Merrybody,
Guttergorm Guttergormpton, Badly Oronparser, Churm Rincewind, Cleveland
Zackhouse, Molonay Tubilderborst, Edeledel Edel, Scorpion de Rooftrouser,
Listenis Youghaupt, Frums Gillygottle.

Cocklecarrot: Are these genuine names?
A Dwarf: No, m'worship.
Cocklecarrot: Then what's your name?
Dwarf: Bogus, m'ludship.
Cocklecarrot: No, your real name.
Dwarf: My real name is Bogus, your excellency.

(At this point the court had to be cleared)

Brought to television by Spike Milligan and to the radio by Richard Ingrams

As I understand it (and as explained in local TV news), the 2
plaintiffs are making fools of themselves.

The reporter said that points that are debatted all existed in
previous works, for example having a child from Jesus and Marie
Madeleine. I have not yet seen the book (and usually I just don't
read bestsellers anyway) so I will moved out of that thread in
case I decide to read it later.

For now, I am reading a book by Serge Brussolo. I read 2 more
medieval stories by the same author and it is very delightfull.
Fictive and not even based on historical events, but fun to read.
Now if I can find which book is the sequel of Le chateau des
sortileges...
