Dear Newsgroup ~
Konrad II, Holy Roman Emperor (died 1039) referred to Count Ludwig I of
Thuringen as his "kinsman" [consanguineo] in 1039 [Reference: Monumenta
Germaniæ Historica (Diplomatum Regum et Imperatorum Germaniae 4)
(1909):415-417]. Elsewhere, I find that Emperor Konrad II's
great-grandson, Emperor Konrad III, in turn referred to Count Ludwig's
grandson, Udo I, Bishop of Naumberg, as his "kinsman" [consanguineo,
consanguineus] [Reference: Monumenta Germaniæ Historica (Diplomatum
Regum et Imperatorum Germaniae 9) (1969):177-179, 342-344]. For the
identification of Bishop Udo I, see the following weblink:
http://www.mittelalter-genealogie.de/mi ... _1148.html
To date, I've been unable to identify the connection between the two
Emperors and the Thuringen family, even though there is quite possibly
a double kinship in place between the two families. Jim Weber's great
website identifies Count Ludwig I of Thuringen as a son of Charles,
Duke of Lower Lorraine (died 994) by his wife, Adelaide/Adelheid of
Verdun. See the following weblink for that information:
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bi ... &id=I24097.
However, my files indicate that Louis/Ludwig, son of Duke Charles, died
young without issue, which, if correct, would negate Jim's
identification. Jim's identification of Count Ludwig I's wife,
Adelaide/Adelheid, as daughter of Godfrey de Verdun may be suspect as
well. However, if the identification is correct, then Count Ludwig I
and Emperor Conrad II would theoretically be related as follows:
1. Gerhard, Count in the Metzgau, died c. 910.
2. Godfrey, Count Palatine, d. 950.
3. Gerhard I, Count of Metz, flourished 970-986.
4. Adelheid of Metz, married Heinrich, Count in the Speyergau.
5. Konrad II, Holy Roman Emperor, died 1039.
1. Gerhard, Count in the Metzgau, died c. 910.
2. Uda, living 963, married Gozelo.
3. Godfrey of Verdun, Marquis of Antwerp, died 995.
4. Adelaide/Adelheid, married Charles, Duke of Lower Lorraine, died
994.
5. Ludwig I, Count of Thuringen, living 1039.
I note that the historian, Donald C. Jackman, inserts an additional
generation in the Emperor's Metz pedigree, making Emperor Konrad III's
mother the granddaughter, rather than daughter of Gerhard I, Count of
Metz as above. However, I'm uncertain why Jackman takes this position,
as Conrad II's mother, Adelheid, was presumably born c. 970, whereas
her putative father, Count Gerhard I, was allegedly living in the
period, 970-986.
