Dear Newsgroup ~

An interesting account of the Fiennes family of Fiennes (Pas de Calais)
and Martock, Somerset is found in Père Anselme's well known work,
Histoire de la Maison Royale de France, volume 6 (1730), pages
167-169. One member of this important family is Sir Jean de Fiennes
(died 1340), castelain of Bourbourg, who married Isabelle of Flanders,
daughter of Gui de Dampierre, Count of Flanders, Marquis of Namur. Sir
Jean and his wife, Isabelle, are of direct interest to English speaking
audiences, as they are ancestors of Jacquette de Luxembourg (died
1472), wife of Richard Wydeville, K.G., 1st Lord Rivers, and thus to
Jacquette's daughter, Queen Elizabeth Wydeville (wife of King Edward
IV of England) [see chart below].

Père Anselme relates that Isabelle of Flanders, wife of Jean de
Fiennes, died in 1323, after which her husband, Jean, donated a rent of
grain to Saumer-au-Bos Abbey for "the repose of her soul."
Curiously, the gift of the rent is found in letters dated 1333, not
1323, which fact is indicated by Père Anselme as follows:

"Aprés la mort de sa femme arrivée en 1323, il donna à l'abbaye de
Saumer-au-Bos, tant pour le repos de son ame que pour être participant
aux prieres des religieux de cette abbaye, une rente de grain qu'il
prenout sur leur grange, par letters du mercredi aprés la S. Denis [13
October] 1333." [Reference: Père Anselme, 6: 169]

So, just when did Isabelle of Flanders die?

A document in the Public Record Office in London indicates that
Isabelle, wife of Jean de Fiennes, was still living in 1331/2:

PRO Document, C 143/212/21:
John de Fenlis to settle the reversion of the manor of Martock,
Somerset, now held for life by Benedict de Fulsham, on himself and
Isabel his wife - dated 5 Edward III [1331/2] [Reference: List of
Inquisitions ad Quod Damnum Part 1 (PRO Lists and Indexes 17) (1904):
302 (abstract of document also available online at
http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/search.asp)].

If Isabelle was still living in 1331/2, it seems evident that her
correct death date is shortly before 13 October 1333, when her husband
made his gift to Saumer-au-Bos Abbey for the repose of her soul, not in
1323. Presumably the date 1323 given for Isabelle's death is simply
an editorial error for the intended date, 1333.

Parties desiring further information on Isabelle of Flanders, wife of
Jean de Fiennes, can find an interesting article featuring her seal in
Revue française d'héraldique et de sigillographie 54/59
(1984-1989): 121-124. There is likewise a helpful article on Jean
de Fiennes featuring a communication to his cousin, King Edward II of
England, dated 1317 in Pierre Chaplais Essays in Medieval Diplomacy and
Administration (1981): X 145-148.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
