Dear Newsgroup ~

For further examples of the simple, straightforward types of kinship
acknowledged by kings prior to 1250, we may refer to the published
charters of King Louis VI of France (died 1137). My research in these
charters shows that King Louis VI acknowledged the following three
individuals as his kinsfolk:

1. Simon de Vermandois, Bishop of Noyon, styled "kinsman'
[consanguineus] [Reference: Robert-Henri Bautier & Jean Dufour, Recueil
des Actes de Louis VI, roi de France (1108-1137) 2 (1992): 12-19,
132-134].

2. Thierry, Count of Flanders, styled "kinsman" [consanguineo])
[Reference: Robert-Henri Bautier & Jean Dufour, Recueil des Actes de
Louis VI, roi de France (1108-1137) 2 (1992): 171].

3. Raoul, Count of Vermandois, styled "kinsman" [consanguineus])
[Reference: Robert-Henri Bautier & Jean Dufour, Recueil des Actes de
Louis VI, roi de France (1108-1137) 2 (1992): 219-220].

King Louis VI was first cousin to all three individuals as indicated
below. King Louis VI, SImon de Vermandois and Raoul de Vermandois were
all grandsons of King Henry I of France, died 1060. King Louis VI and
Count Thierry were both grandsons of Gertrude of Saxony, but by
different husbands.

1. Henry I, King of France, died 1060.
2. Philip I, King of France, died 1108.
3. Louis VI, King of France, died 1137.

1. Henry I, King of France, died 1060.
2. Hugh Magnus, Count of Vermandois, died 1101.
3. Raoul I, Count of Vermandois, died 1152.

1. Henry I, King of France, died 1060.
2. Hugh the Great, Count of Vermandois, died 1101.
3. Simon de Vermandois, Bishop of Noyon.

1. Gertrude of Saxony, married (1st) Florenz I, Count of Holland.
2. Bertha of Holland, married Philippe I. King of France.
3. Louis VI, King of France, died 1137.

1. Gertrude of Saxony, married (2nd) Robert I, Count of Flanders.
2. Gertrude of Flanders, married Thierry II, Duke of Lorraine.
3. Thierry, Count of Flanders, died 1168.

As we can see, there is nothing elaborate in these three kinships. For
interest's sake, I might note that Raoul and Simon de Vermandois above
were brothers of the newsgrpup's Ur-Mother, Isabel de Vermandois (died
c. 1147), wife successively of Robert de Beaumont, 1st Earl of
Leicester, and William de Warenne, 2nd Earl of Surrey.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
