Dear Newsgroup ~

Emperor Henry III (died 1056) referred to Irmingarde, widow of Count
Otto von Hammerstein, as his "kinswoman" ("Irmingardae dilectae nepti
nostrae") [Reference: Monumenta Germaniæ Historica (Diplomatum Regum
et Imperatorum Germaniae 5) (1931): 98-99]. Irmingarde is known to
have been a sister of Gozelo I, Duke of Upper Lorraine, which
individual is in the ancestry of many newsgroup posters. Working out
Irmingarde's ancestry, it appears that her paternal grandmother was
Uda, daughter of Gerhard I, Count of Metz, as follows:

1. Gerhard I, Count of Metz (died 910).
2. Uda, married Gozelo.
3. Godfrey, Count of Verdun & Ardennes.
4. Irmingarde, married Count Otto von Hammerstein.

My files indicates that Emperor Henry III's paternal grandmother,
Adelheid, is said to be a daughter of Gerhard I, Count of Metz. The
Mittelalterliche Genealogie website, on the other hand, identifies her
as a daughter of Richard, Count of Metz. In Europaische Stanmtafeln, 6
(1978): 129, Adelheid is identified as a descendant of Matfried (of the
Metz family), but is uncertan as to her father.

In short, it seems likely that Emperor Henry III and Countess Imingarde
were related through a common descent from the Metz family. But how?
