London Bridge - Financing a Public Facility

Court of Husting London discusses charitable gifts
bequeathed to London Bridge.

Charitable gifts in the wills enrolled in the Court of
Husting, London Bridge excelled all others in the
number of bequests made to its use. Until the 12th
Century the bridge was constructed of timber; then a
stone structure was commenced by Peter of Colechurch.

King John estowed certain vacant land for the erection
of tenements, the profits of same to be for the use of
the bridge. This property, together with other estates
similar bestowed (Edward 1st granted the Stock Market
to the Corporation with the understanding that the
profits be devoted to the maintenance of the bridge)
was vested in the Mayor and Commonality of the City of
London as Wardens of the Bridge, and formed the
nucleus of what is known as the "Bridge House Estate".

This trust estate augmented with gifts and bequests of
pious and charitable citizens produces at the present
day a considerable yearly income, and is charged with
the support, and expences attached to paving,
lighting, and cleansing of several bridges of
Blackfrairs and Southwark.

Sincerely Yours,

Paul Bulkley
