[OT] Mary Todd Lincoln ancestry

Legg inn av steven perkins » 20 feb 2006 20:31:02

Craig Hart[1] has Mary Todd Lincoln as a descendant of the Todd family
of New Haven, CT through a marriage of James Parker of PA and KY, to
Mary Todd of New Haven, dau of Gershom Todd and Elizabeth Merriman. I
tried to check this and could not verify it. Has anyone else looked
at Mary Todd Lincoln's ancestry?

First Two Generations of Descent, McFarland, 2004, ISBN: 0-864-1956-3,
pp147-152, at 148.

Thanks,

John:

There are two separate Todd families in the genealogy as presented,
one in her paternal line and one in her maternal line.

1 Mary Ann Todd Lincoln
2 Robert Smith Todd
3 Eliza Ann Parker
4 Levi Todd
5 Jane Briggs
6 Robert P Parker
7 Elizabeth Porter
8 David Levi Todd, Longford, Ireland
9 Hannah Owens
10 Samuel Briggs
11 Sarah Logan
12 James Parker
13 Mary Todd, New Haven, CT
14 Andrew Porter
15 Elizabeth McDowell

Let's see. One possibility is that her offspring married a cousin. Far
from unusual.

Another is that she coincidentally married someone else named Todd.

Stranger things have happened.

In the 1630's through 1650's, three men named Raymond settled on land
adjacent to each other's along a river in newly founded Beverly,
Massachusetts. It was long assumed they were brothers. Two of them were
brothers. Not only has no relationship to the third been found in the will
of the father of the first two and the church records of his family, but he
has been proven to have come from the other side of England, and to be
related to much more well to do families in that part of England than the
small landholding yeomen that the first family was.

Dear Mr. Perkins,

I have not checked out Craig Hart's book, and I gather from your
comment that there was no reference to the sources for the link between
Mary Todd, dau of Gershom Todd and Elizabeth Merriman and Mary Todd
Lincoln. However, the references I have for the New Haven Todds,
"Donald L. Jacobus, Families of Ancient New Haven, 1922-1932", page
1828, states that Mary, the dau. of Gershom and Elizabeth died without
issue in 1752. No mention of any marriage.

Also, "The Todd Family in America or the Descendants of Christopher
Todd" page 33, by John Edwards Todd, D.D., edited by George Iru Todd
lists Mary, the same dau. of Gershom and Elizabeth as being born in
1732, but no marriage or record of her descendants are listed.

Regards,

Robert Todd

Robert:

Thanks for your reply.

A reference is give to _American Patriots_ by Ronald Vern Jackson and
Altha Polson, Salt Lake City, A.G.E.S., 1982. No page is given. I
have not seen that work.

Like you I have looked at Jacobus and can find nothing to confirm or
deny the alleged link. I just thing it is improbable at this time.

If you descend from New Haven families, please contact me off-list. I
descend from 26 New Haven families.

Regards,

Steven C. Perkins
