In combing through several articles in VCH Cambridge, I have been able
to reconstruct some ancestry for the De la Haye family of Shepreth,
which follows.

According to Roskell's HoPVol 2, p 766 sub Dengaine, Sir John d'Engaine
of Teversham (c1339-1394/5) was son and heir of Sir John d'Engaine of
Teversham by his wife Joan; he was Sheriff of Cambs & Hunts 1376-1377,
and returned as MP for the county of Cambs [knight of the shire] twice
in 1388; JP from 1379; HoP says:
"[he] came from a branch of the Dengaine (sic) family, long established
at Taversham [sic; recte Teversham] and Stowe-cum-Quy in
Cambridgeshire, which also [pssessed the manor of Wareseley in
Huntingdonshire."
His father was also an MP for Cambs "in no fewer than 12 parliaments
between 1338 and 1362" died in August 1363.
His wife Margaret was the kinswoman and next heir to Alice, widow of
Sir Thomas Heslerton in "about 1375".
According to the 1619 Visitation of Cambridgeshire, the elder Sir John
was son of William Engaine of Teversham, but it seems a generation is
missing here, supplied by VCH sub Stow-cum-Quy & Teversham (see also
Long Stanton). His father was actually Richard Engaine, whom VCH says
was living in 1310 and whose widow, Parnel, in 1316 acquired Teversham.
(under age in 1269; ff 1293 - VCH); William was son of Robert (ff 1249
- VCH; "53 Henry III" [sic] ie c1268 - Vis Cambs) by his wife Agnes (a
widow in 1261, according to VCH); Robert was [probably, says VCH] son
of another William (ff 1223 - VCH; 8 Henry III, agrees Vis Cambs); this
William was son of Robert Engaine (ff 10 Richard I & John - Vis Cambs;
Lord of Stow 1199-120 - VCH).
VCH provides the earliest ancestor I have come across: Robert Engaine's
mother Alice [quaere: should this be "Avice" - my handwriting is
ambiguous!]. She is said to have been living in 1207. However, it
hints at an earlier descent calling them "a cadet branch, seated at
Waresley, Hunts, of the Northants Engaines" (sub Stow-cum-Quy).

Next problem. I have not been able to put together the ancestry for
John Engaine, who m. Margaret de la Haye. The accounts in VCH are
disjointed and muddled. Does anyone have information on his line?

From this point, the Visitation and VCH agree in relation to the
generations, if not the dates. Richard was in turn son of William

This is interesting thread. See Rosie's post of 2004-8-18 "Re:

It would appear that the Avice you reference might be the Avice
Camerarius (married to NN d'Engaine, father of Robert) she talks about
in the post. See also DD, pps 200, 410. Farrer, Feudal Cambridgeshire,

Yes, and I would love to turn up the connection between him, Michael
and Eustace. It seems likely that they are one family. Picot's son
Robert's descent is in Quy-cum-Stow, Cambs, if I remember right, but no
other sons are mentioned in the sources to which I have access. Maybe
we have a son of Roger rather than of Picot himself. A Roger was
Picot's tenant at Rampton, Cambs, in 1086. Keats-Rohan has very little
to say about this family.

The information on the Teversham Engaines has been most helpful. I
discovered, in dredging up the sources, that Sir John's sister
Katherine m. Sir John Burgh, of Burgh, Cambs. That was another
dangling line in my database. Two for the price of one! Many thanks.

States this Sir John de Burgh married first Mary de Grey dau of Roger
de Grey by his wife Elizabeth dau of John Second Lord Hastings she bore
him two son's. Sir John de Burgh married 2nd in 1362 Katherine daughter
of John d'Engayne of Quy Cum Stow and Teversham co. Cambs by his wife
Joan. He had 3 daughters Elizabeth Margaret and Joan. Sir John died in
1393 and his wife Katherine died in 1409. In Katherine will she names
her son-in-law Sir John Ingoldesthorp and his wife Elizabeth. Also
names Margaret wife of Sir John Zouche and also her dau Joan Hasilden.
She also names her brother Thomas Dengayne and his wife. Joan the
Youngest daughter married 2nd in 1404 Sir William Harpeden later he
changed his name to Assenhull.

Thanks, Mike - that is very useful. Not only does it confirm that Sir
John Engaine had a brother Thomas, but (assuming the marriage date of
his sister Catherine to Sir John Burgh - 1362 - is correct) it also
shows why Roskell states that Richard Haselden, who married firstly in
1379, could not have been the son of Thomas Haselden by Joan, daughter
of Sir John & Catherine Burgh.
I still have my doubts about the alleged marriage of a sister Elizabeth
Engaine to "- Grey of Wilton", as I have not seen this confirmed
elsewhere.

You are right. I sailed right by that one. I do find a Richard who m
Sara Chesney in Gt Staughton (VCH Hunts v 2 p 361) and it seems that he
must be the same Richard. There are a lot of references in the
footnote that may help to confirm (or not). I have many sources for
this Richard, and will need to go back and revisit them. He was of
Pytchley as well as Gt Staughton and d. 1216/7 (the above mendioned VCH
article says he d. 1208) according to my notes. My notes do not
indicate a son Robert, but maybe he had another marriage to Avice, or
Robert's is not his son after all. Another conundrum for the sgm
detective squad.
