Hello Group,

I am presently researching (with rather limited resources) one of my
family lines, the Vavasours of Hazelwood and have come across a puzzle
which I can't work out. I was hoping someone here could point me in the
right direction.

Who was the wife of William Vavasour of Hazelwood, who died 8 Sep 1369,
father of Sir Henry Vavasour of Hazelwood who died March 1413?

"The Visitation of Yorkshire In 1584/5 and 1612", Ed, Joseph Foster,
London, 1875 p 236: "Vavasour of Hazelwood" shows her as "Elizabeth,
daughter to ...., Stapleton".

In "The Stapletons of Yorkshire" by H.E. Chetwynd-Stapylton, Longmans,
Green & Co., London, 1897, p60 she is said to be the daughter of Sir
Nicholas de Stapleton and Isabella de Bretagne: "Elizabeth, wife of
William Vavasour of Denton, who lies buried with her husband in the
chapel at Haselwood, under a marble slab, with the arms of Vavasour
impaling Stapleton, and an inscription." [cites Torre's MS. (Lib. at
York), iii.p.iii]

Stirnet, citing TCP (Vavasour) says she was Elizabeth de Cressy of
Hodstock: "William Vavasor of Hazlewood (b c07.1334, d c10.1369)
m.(before 16.10.1361) Elizabeth Cressy (d before 08.11.1404, dau of Sir
Hugh de Cressy)."

A confirmation of this is an entry in the Calendar of Patent Rolls of
Henry IV, where Hugh de Cressy refers to his aunt Elizabeth Vavasour:
"28 Nov 1400: Licence, for 80 marks paid by him in the hanaper, for
Hugh son of John Cressy, knight (militis), to enfeoff Robert
Cumberworth and John Gayteford of the manors of Risgate and Braytoft,
held of the king in socage by the service of 40s. yearly, and for the
latter to re-grant the same to him and the heirs of his body, with
remainders in moieties as below, viz., firstly to John de Clifton,
knight, and Katharine his wife, sister of the said Hugh, and the heirs of
her body and then to John Markham and his heirs of the body of
Elizabeth his late wife, sister of the said Hugh, and vice versa,
secondly to William Erghom, knight, and his heirs of the body of
Katharine his late wife, sister of the said John Cressy, and then to
Elizabeth Vavasour, sister of the said John Cressy, and the heirs of
her body and vice versa, thirdly to Hugh Cressy of Oulecotes and the
heirs of his body and lastly to the right heirs of the said Hugh son of
John."

Did William Vavasour marry both Elizabeths, or is this a confusion of
two different William Vavasours?

Any help in sorting this out would be appreciated.
