Joan de Lucy and her posthumous son ....

On Leo's great web site here
http://www.genealogics.org/getperson.ph ... 1&tree=LEO

we see Joan de Lucy d 4 Jul 1331
daughter of Anthony, 1st Lord Lucy
and wife of William de Melton b abt 1317
by whom she had Sir William de Melton b abt 1341

That is a nice trick, to marry a boy, just out of short pants, and produce a
son ten years after you yourself have died. The distruction of this link may
cause general mourning, but I think it's entirely possible if Joan did marry
a William de Melton, she perhaps married one a generation earlier than the one
we see here.

Comments appreciated.

Joan de Lucy is the mother of Sir William de Melton, just as Leo says.
However, the two approximated dates he has for the births of her
husband and son, however, appear to be in error. This is no biggie.
I'm sure Leo will be happy to revise the dates.

In 1403 Joan de Lucy's grandson, Sir John Melton, obtained the
reversion of the manor of Radston, Northamptonshire (a Lucy manor) on
the death of Thomas Percy, Earl of Worcester.

So the link is still good.

You should be able to find additional information on the Lucy-Melton
descent in the following sources:

1. Nicholson & Burns, Hist. & Antiq. of the Counties of Westmoreland &
Cumberland 1 (1777): 265-292.

2. Baker, Hist. & Antiqs. of Northampton 1 (1822-30): 672-673
(Melton pedigree).

3. Hunter, South Yorkshire 2 (1831): 162 ("Sir John Melton =
Margaret, dau. of Roger lord Clifford").

4. Nicolas, Controversy between Scrope & Grosvenor 2 (1832): 301-302.

5. Banks, Baronies in Fee 1 (1844): 298-299 (sub Lucy of Cockermouth)
("Sir John [Melton] = Margaret, daughter of Roger Lord Clifford").

6. Testamenta Eboracensia 2 (Surtees Soc. 30) (1855): 184.

7. Flower, Vis. of Yorkshire 1563-4 (H.S.P. 16) (1881): 202-203
(Melton pedigree: "Sir John Melton Knight = Margaret doughter of the
Lord Clyfford").

8. Yorkshire Arch. Jour. 18 (1905): 354-411. C.P. 8 (1932): 255 (sub
Lucy).

9. C.P. 8 (1932): 255 (sub Lucy).

10. Walker, Yorkshire Peds. 2 (H.S.P. 95) (1943): 285-286 (Melton
pedigree: "Sir John Melton of Aston, Knt. = Margaret, dau. of Roger,
Lord Clifford").

11. Paget, Baronage of England (1957) 134: 8. VCH Yorkshire E.R. 2
(1974): 252.

12. Roskell et al., House of Commons 1386-1421 3 (1992): 714-716
(biog. of Sir William Melton).

So the link is still good.
