Howdy, all,
I have read in several places that Humphrey Beaufo, Esquire of Emscote,
Whilton and Barford St. John was killed fighting for the King at Bosworth. I
have his inquisition post mortem, which specifies his death as having taken
place on 22 August 1485, although it doesn't mention the circumatances of
his death.
Does anyone have a reference which specifically mentions this individual as
having been among the combatants, or even more specifically among the dead?
Peace

They seem to be different men. See PRO C 1/47/4:
Anne, duchess of Buckingham, and Walter Blount, knight, lord Mountjoy,
her husband. v. William Hygford, esquire: The wardship and marriage of
Humphrey son of Richard Beaufo, esquire, late holder of an acre of land
in Hilcrombe for the twentieth part of a knight's fee.
1386-1486
Perhaps a review of rolls and state papers from the early years of
Henry VII would show whether the Beaufo family suffered a loss of
property etc following 1485?

Re: Bosworth Field
Howdy all,
I have seen this family (Beaufo, or Beaufoo) incorrectly called "Beaufort"
before, so it may well be the same individual. They are detailed in the
Oxford Visitations, though at the moment I can't recall which.
Humphrey Beaufo and his father-in-law John Hugford of Emscote, were joint
constables of Warwick Castle during Richard's reign, and Hugford was
supposedly at Bosworth as well. Both were commissioners of array for the
1485 campaign. Hugford died in December of 1485 (C142/1/29).
Humphrey's inquisition post mortem (C142/1/136) gives 22 Aug. 1485 as death
date, but doesn't mention the cause of death. I'm pretty sure that he's the
"Humphrey Beaufort" that I occasionally see mentioned as having died at
Bosworth, but need more evidence.
According to a lawsuit from the 1530s (C 1/905/27-32; I have this, though I
am not done transcribing it, yet), Humphrey's heir John (2 years old in his
inquisition) must have been allowed to inherit rather extensive properties.
This lawsuit also mentions Humphrey's daughter Joane, who married Richard
Throckmorton, son of Sir Robert of Coughton. Sir Robert was certainly a
strong supporter of Henry VII.
Anyway, that's all just background stuff. Anything anyone can dig up would
be great.
Cheers!
