Dear Newsgroup ~

The authoritative Complete Peerage, 2 (1912): 137 (sub Berkeley) has a
good account of the life history of Thomas Berkeley, Lord Berkeley, who
was born in 1505, and died in 1534. Regarding his 2nd marriage, the
following information is provided:

"He married 2ndly, (shortly afterwards) Apr. 1533, Anne, daughter of
Sir John Savage, of Frodsham, co. Chester, by Anne, daughter of Ralph
Bostock."

Unfortunately, no source is provided for the above information. And,
since his 1st wife, Mary Hastings, allegedly died the previous month,
March 1532/3, it would appear that Thomas Berkeley remarried within a
month of his first wife's death.

The following settlement confirms that Thomas Berkeley did in fact
marry within at least two months of his first wife's death. The
settlement below is dated dated 21 May 1533, and it specifically states
that the marriage of Lord Berkeley and his wife, Anne, was "already
solemnized."

"Grant dated 21 May, 25 Hen. VIII. [1533], by Thomas Berkeley, Lord of
Berkeley, Mowbrey and Segrave.

In consideration of the marriage already solemnized between me and my
wife Lady Anne Berkeley, I grant to Sir George Brooke, knight, Lord
Cobham, Sir John Portt, knight, Justice of the Common Pleas, Sir
Richard Page, knight, William Bruerton, esquire, Thomas Whyttonton of
Pawncely, esquire, Thomas Lytylton, esquire., John Baldwyn,
Serjeant-at-Law, Edward Mountagewe, Serjeant-at-Law, John Savage, son
and heir of John Savage, deceased, Edmund Savage. esquire, Christopher
Savage, esquire, John Constable, Thomas Matston, John Portt, son and
heir of said John Portt, Thomas Bromeley, David Brooke and Baldwin
Porter, gents., my manor of Melton Mowbrey, Segrave and Seleby, co.
Leicester, my manor of Brettby, Rostlaston and Caton, co. Derby, of
Caloughdon near Coventry, co. Warwick, in trust for the use of me, Lord
Berkeley, and my wife Lady Anne and our heirs. Sigmature and seal of
Thomas Berkeley.

Endorsed 24 May, 25 Hen. VIII. [1533], Thomas Trye of Caloughdon,
esquire, a tenant of the manor, made an assignement to Edward Savage,
Thomas Matston and David Broke at London, in the presence of Maurice
Berkeley, esquire, Edward Aston, knight, Thomas Waterton, esquire, and
others." [Reference: Fragmenta Genealogica, 11 (1906): 21].
