Mayflower Descendant article ("Who Were the Chipmans of Dela
Hello, all.
Can anyone advise me as to the quickest and most economical way to get
copies of a two-part article which appeared in the _Mayflower Descendant_
magazine in 2003?
The article in question is "Who Were the Chipmans of Delaware and Maryland?"
and was written by Elizabeth Pearson White and Edwin Wagner Coles. It can
be found in _Mayflower Descendant_, Vol. 52, No. 1, pp. 19 - 38, and Vol.
52, No. 2, pp. 111 - 118.
Apparently, Mrs. White and Mr. Coles finally managed to authenticate my
father's 2 lines of descent from Richard Warren, John Howland, and Howland's
eventual wife (Elizabeth Tilley) and her parents. In doing so, they also
provided him with a descent from Malcolm II, King of Scots, via Alice
Freeman of New London, Connecticut, by her 1st marriage (to John Tompson).
Thanks in advance for any tips you can give.

Thanks for posting that, David - I went through it with considerable
interest.
I note in the archives there was some discussion about a possible
descent for Alice Freeman from Hughes Capet (d 996), in which it
appeared that Gary Boyd Roberts and Kay disagreed about the standard of
proof available. Also, Leo adverted at one point to a descent from
Charlemagne (quite possibly predicated on the Capetian descent,
though). Do you have any details of these?

Re: Mayflower Descendant article ("Who Were the Chipmans of
I do not have a problem with the Charlemagne (as covered in RD600) and
Aethelred the Unready lines, but there is some disagreement about the
line from Malcolm II, king of Scots. "Ancestral Roots Eighth edition,"
line 34 gen. 21, agrees with the above pedigree posted by Dave Teague,
and cites two articles in "Complete Peerage", an article in "Scots
Peerage," and an article in Dunbar's "Scottish Kings" in support of the
line. I do not have access to SP or Dunbar, but I did check the CP
citations, and found that things aren't quite as positive as AR8 would
lead one to believe. While Gospatric I is agreed to be son of Maldred,
and Maldred the son of a Crinan,
CP4-504 says in footnote (b): "Maldred was pr. brother of Duncan, King
of Scotland, 1034-40, who was s. of Crinan, Abbot of Dunkeld, which
Crinan is conjectured (by Skene) to be the same as Crinan Tein, the
father of this Maldred."
CP9-704: "Gospatric, s. and h. of Maldred (presumably s. of Crinan,
lay abbot of Dunkeld, by Bethoc, da. of Malcom II of Scotland) by
Ealdgyth, da. of Ughtred, Earl of Northumberland, by his wife Elgiva,
da. of Ethelred II--thus combining in his person the blood of the
ancient Earls of Northumberland and of the royal houses of England and
Scotland...."
It seems to me that given Maldred's marriage connections this link to
Malcolm II would not be surprising, but I wonder if anyone has
conclusively settled the question.

but there is less certainty about the Parke union, although all sources
I've seen accept it with little protest)

James Chipman is the common ancestor of the Chipmans of Kentucky, North
Carolina, and Tennessee, and had descendants that remained in Delaware
for some years [e.g., desc. of his son Benjamin Chipman, and desc. of
John Chipman Jr., a grandson and proprietor of a Sussex Co. mill]; a
brief notice of this family is given in A Chipman Genealogy, 1970, p.
19, while an in-depth treatment is in White & Coles "Who Were The
Chipmans Of Delaware And Maryland," Mayflower Descendant, in two
parts, Vol. 52, 2003 ; James Chipman was a descendant of Mayflower
passengers John Howland, the Tilleys, and Richard Warren)
Gens. 1-13 are well covered in AR8, 14-30 in RD600. There appears to be
no descent of Alice Freeman from the Corbet family, as is sometimes
alleged, because her ancestor Sir Robert de Harley wasn't the one who
married Joan Corbet.
I think this Charlemagne line and the Ethelred II line are fine, but
there is some confusion about the Malcolm II descent as noted in gen.
24 above; the Charlemagne line is covered from Louis IV in Roberts'
RD600 on pg. 557 to the Spinney/Throckmorton marraige; the ancestry of
Louis IV is well known; AR8 then runs the line to Alice Freeman via
lines 43 & 43a; the remainder from colonial research, some of which is
noted above. In most cases, the parentage of the spouses is known.
Hope this helps.

Pope Cornlius in the third century, of a collegiate church, served by
twelve canons, who had the right of administering justice within their

II, about 1050 secured from the chapter of Mainz a portion of the head

Bucks. (John Giffard was a descendant of the Earls of Northumberland
and Dunbar, Aethelred II the Unready, King of England 979-1016, and
probably of Malcolm II, King of Scotland 1005-1034; see AR8 & RD600,
however, the descent from Malcolm II depends on whether "Crinan the
Thane" and "Crinan lay abbott of Dunkeld" are the same person;
ancestral to John Giffard are the families of Vaux, Stretle, de
Missenden, Morteyn, de Rothwell, de Merston, Gobion, de Stuteville, de

of the Tompson children are recorded at the parish of Preston Capes)
(2) Robert Parke (the Tompson marriage and children are well attested,
but there is less certainty about the Parke union, although all sources
I've seen accept it with little protest)
31. Bridget Tompson, d. 1643; m. Capt. George Denison
32. Hannah Denison, b. 20 May 1643; m. (2) 15 Jul 1680 Capt. Joseph

Benjamin Minor, d. 28 Feb 1711
34. Mary Minor; m. 28 Oct 1717 James Chipman, b. 18 Sep 1697 (this
James Chipman is the common ancestor of the Chipmans of Kentucky, North

A LINE OF DESCENT FROM CHARLES THE GREAT TO MARY MINOR, WIFE OF JAMES
CHIPMAN OF STONINGTON, CT., NEW YORK, AND DELAWARE
<major snippage>
25. Thomas Giffard, d. 10 Oct 1511, of Twyford, Bucks.; m. Joan (Jane)
Langston, d. d. 22 Mar 1534/5 (the line of Danvers of Ipswell, Oxfordshire

<snip>
Does anyone have access to Joan Langston's Danvers ancestry, and if so,
could he, she, or they post it? AR7, line 29A, Gen.39 (Thomas Giffard/Joan
Langston) cites "the descent of Amy Danvers (Joan Langston's mother) from
Hugh Capet". What is this line, and is it generally accepted?
Thanks in advance,

There is a website:
http://hindskw.cts.com/KennethHinds/21956.html
which gives considerable background on these people. It must be used
with care and checked against other sources; it's helpful, but note
that the incorrect Harley/Corbet information is posted there.
This source says that:
Joan Langston who m. Thomas Giffard was the daughter of
John Langston of Caversfield Oxfords. and Margaret Danvers his wife who
was the daughter of
John Danvers and Joan Bruley of N. Weston
Stratton's "Applied Genealogy" (1988) has a paragraph on this issue on
pg. 164, which shows that Alice Freeman did not have a descent from one
of King John's illeg. daughters via Corbet, who married into a
different family. I know of no Capetian ancestry for Alice Freeman,
but of course one could eventually be discovered.
