Brinley family, New England cousins of the Foleys

Severals years back, I posted on the Brinleys and their apparent
relationship to the famous Foley family, ironmasters of Stourbridge.
I've just noticed that in the 1674 marriage license of Brinley and
Quick, the allegation was made by a certain Thomas Foley . . .

See Savage's _Genealogical Dictionary_ for the statement that the
father of Francis Brinley of Newport, Rhode Island, was one Thomas
Brinley of Datchett, Bucks., Auditor of the Revenue to Charles I and
II.

NEHGR, 37:382-83, prints two pedigree charts deriving the revenue
auditor from the family of Brinley or Brindley of Willenhall,
Staffordshire.

NEHGR 37:382, pedigree from the 1634 _Visitation of London_, gives
"Thomas Brinley, eld. son, one of His Maties auditors, living 1634,"
who was son of "Richard Brinley of Willenhall in com. Stafford," son,
in turn, of "Lawrence Brinley of Willenhall."

NEHGR 37:383, pedigree from Randall Holme's Heraldic Collections for
Cheshire, Harleian MS., No. 2119, gives "Thomas Brindley, the King's
Auditor," son of "Richard [Brindley] of Exeter," who was son of
"Lawrance [Brindley], of Willnall, co. Staff."

So the two pedigrees agree, except as to the place of residence of
Richard Brinley.

The pedigree from Holme's Heraldic Collections gives Richard Brindley/
Brinley of Exeter a brother "William Brindley of Willnall" who had
daughters "Alice, ux. Richard Soley [sic], of Sturbridge, co. Worc."
and "Margaret, ux. Richard Soley [sic], jr., of Dudley, co. Worc., son
of Richard, by his 1st wife." In other words, Margaret married her
own sister's stepson.

But the family name must be Foley, rather than Soley, for the _DNB_
sketch of Thomas Foley, M.P., d. 1677, states that he was "eldest son
of Richard Foley of Stourbridge, by a second marriage with Alice,
daughter of William Brindley of Hide, Staffordshire." The new 106th
edition of _Burke's Peerage and Baronetage_ also mentions "RICHARD
FOLEY [of Stourbridge, Worcs.] m. 2nd Alice (bur. 28 May 1663), dau.
of William Brindley, of Willenhall, and sis. of George Brindley, of
the Hyde, Kinver, Staff." Richard and Alice (Brinley/ Brindley)
Foley's great-grandson entered the peerage as Baron Foley of
Kidderminster in January 1711/12. I believe the late Queen Mother was
a descendant of the Barons Foley.

FDR was a descendant of the Brinleys through the Sylvester and Lloyd
families.
