Victoria County History Question

Legg inn av mrtea » 06 feb 2006 04:24:37

I'm thinking of getting the Victoria County Histories for Lancashire
and Cheshire which go
for about $80 per volume in the reprint editions. Does anyone know if
they are soon to be
available on some other medium, say CD or Google Books? These books
are now in
the public domain, aren't they?

I don't know about the public-domain status of the VCH volumes, but at least
some of the counties are available on CD through Quintin Publications
[www.quintinpublications.com]. For example, they advertise the Lancashire
VCH for $80 for [almost] the entire set [vols. 1-7, strangely not including
vol. 8 - possibly still under copyright?].

Not sure what copyright applies to corporately published books. If the
authors retained the copyright on their articles, then that lasts,
these days I beleive, for 70 years after their death. So it is quite
likely that a fair number of the volumes are still in copyright.

On the other hand, some of the modern volumes are on the internet.

There are some scanned images of Lancashire vol. 3 here:

I don't doubt the rest of Lancashire will be appearing sooner or later on
Google Books, depending how long you're willing to wait.

The Cheshire volumes have all be published since 1979, so they must still be
in copyright. Volume 5, part 1, and part of volume 3 are available on the
British History Online website:
