I would be most grateful if anyone searching the Ferrers family of
Tamworth would, if they have access to wills, property records etc of
the 13th and 14th centuries, examine them for any references to Ensor
(variously spelled Endesore and Ednesovere). Dugdale, Antiquities of
Warwickshire, thought the Ensors may have been stewards/sub-tenants
of the Ferrers because of a shared element of their arm. bearings,
viz., horseshoes.

Dear Robert,

In case it is of interest, you may like to know that there was a family link
between Hugh de Meynell, seneschal of William Ferrers, Earl of Derby in the
mid 13th century and a Thomas Ednesor/Ensor.

Amongst the children of Geoffrey le Savage (d. 1230) and his wife Pernel le
Despenser were William, Philippa and Lucy. Philippa married Hugh de Meynell
of Meynell Langley, seneschal of William Ferrers. Her sister Lucy married
Thomas Ensor.(see Journal of the Derbyshire Archaeological Soc. Vol 2
1926/7. Article by SPH Statham p 314). In the Rydeware cartulary there is a
charter of 1253 by William Ferrers which is witnessed by Hugh de Meynell and
Thomas de Ednesevore amonst others. Hugh de Meynell also had horseshoes in
his coat of arms.

When William le savage (heir of Geoffrey) died in 1259 (see ipm) his heirs
were Philippa and his nephew Thomas Ensor (son of Thomas and Lucy). This
Thomas had sisters Joan and Amice. Joan married Sir Adam de Hertwell. This
couple had a son Sir Richard de Hertwell who together with Amice were the
heirs in 1285 (ipm) of Thomas Ensor junior.

It may also be relevant that the Domesday holder of the manor of Ednesor in
Derbyshire was Henry de Ferrers.

Regards,

CNW
