identifications and number of candidates

It is common sense that before identifying two namesakes as one person,
a big factor is how common the name was. One needs less evidence to
make a convincing case for linking two namesakes with a very unusual
name, and a good deal more evidence to make a convincing case linking
namesakes with a very common name. We all agree, right?

Although this is common sense, I would like to cite this as a principle
set forth by authorities in the field of genealogy. Can anyone
recommend a published work where an authority states as much?

Thank you.
