Dear Newsgroup ~

In 1338 Guy I de Châtillon, Count of Blois, referred to his cousin,
Eleanor of Brittany, Abbess of Fontevrault, as his "cousine"
[Reference: Léopold Delisle, Catalogue des manuscrits ancient & des
chartes (1888): 30]. Count Guy and Abbess Eleanor were related to each
other in the 5th and 4th degrees of kinship (or by modern parlance
third cousins, once removed), by virtue of common descent from Robert
II, Count of Dreux (died 1218).

1. Robert II, Count of Dreux, died 1218.
2. Philippe de Dreux, married Henri, Count of Bar.
3. Margarethe of Bar, married Henri, Count of Luxembourg and Namur.
4. Isabelle of Luxembourg, married Guy de Dampierre, Count of Flanders
& Namur.
5. Beatrix of Flanders, married Hugues II de Châtillon, Count of Blois
& Dunois.
6. Guy I de Châtiillon, Count of Blois.

1. Robert II, Count of Dreux, died 1218.
2. Pierre de Dreux, Duke of Brittany, married Alix de Thouars.
3. Jean I, Duke of Brittany, married Blanche of Champagne.
4. Jean II, Duke of Brittany, married Beatrice of England.
5. Eleanor of Brittany, Abbess of Fontevrault, died 1342.

To the Newsgroup:

This posting by Richardson is puzzling.

Are we being informed that Guy de Châtiillon was a cousin of Eleanor
of Brittany?

Surely Richardson knows that if such a question were to arise in the
mind of any of us, we could discover its answer on the internet.
Moreover, if such a question were of such great magnitude and urgency
as to be disturbing, a simple query to this newsgroup would elicit any
number of kind responses, some of which would differ (and also be
accurate) from that about which Richardson has chosen enlighten us.

Could it be that he believes that a kinship of such a degree between
two persons of the comital rank is so unsual that it merits special
mention? Just think of that.

I wonder, the the year 1338, how many persons, who were French counts
(or dukes) or their wives or siblings, were kin within the 5th or 4th
degree? How many of them would be aware of the degree and detail of
that kinship? How many chose to place evidence of that knowledge in
writing? How many, knowing of such a kinship, did not place evidence
of it in writing? These are questions which naturally arise when a post
such Richardson's comes into view.

Could it be that Richardson is conducting a systematic study of kinship
among French counts? If so, that would be an interesting departure
from his usual anecdotal approach to reseach; and we should encourage
him to do so. The questions posed above, could form the introduction
to the study and the framework for its methodology.

Being blessed with Richardson's concerns on matters of such great
import is one of the benefits of participating in this newsgroup.
