How Latin is Henrietta Maria? Not at all, I would say, and I am not the only one believing this.

Leo,

Go to the following link,

http://www.a2a.org.uk/

click on "Search these catalogues"

and then enter the term

Henrietta Maria

and you will find some of the highest nobility in England naming their daughters Henrietta Maria. For instance, if you click on Cheshire, the Stanleys named daughters Henrietta Maria, at a time they were CERTAINLY not using a Latin form of the name! And DR should be very familiar with Henrietta Maria Somerset/Somersett. Is he claiming she was using the Latin form of the name?!

This gives evidence that Henrietta Maria was a completely proper English form of the name. There are far fewer entries for the spelling Henriette Marie.

Also, if you go to

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/cata ... lt.asp?j=1

and click on "Search he Catalogue"

you will only get 21 hits for Henriette Marie

but if you enter Henrietta Maria you will get 430 hits. Mind you, this is the catalogue of The National Archives, so if DR were really seeking what an acceptable English form would be.... SP means state papers, so if you click on that category link, you will find what the confidants of the crown called her in their personal correspondence in ENGLISH.
