Phonetic erosions

Legg inn av Tony Hoskins » 28 jan 2006 02:27:01

The English seem for centuries to have been particularly prone to what
one might call "phonetic erosions".

Benedict(a) = "Bennet"
Augustine = "Austin"
Cholmondeley = "Chumley"
Fetherstonhaugh = "Fanshaw"
Cirencenster = "Sisister"
Kilkhampton [my grandmother's family's home] = "Kilkinton"
Mohun = "Moon"

etc., etc.
